5. The Surprising Ozone Paradox In a counterintuitive twist, the man-made ozone hole has actually shielded the Antarctic interior from global warming. The loss of ozone strengthens the polar vortex, trapping freezing air over the pole and preventing the rapid melting seen in the Antarctic Peninsula.#video

Have you read our deep dive into this year’s Antarctic #OzoneHole yet? Our latest article unpacks the 2025 development which resulted in the smallest and shortest-lived ozone hole in five years.

The ozone layer is recovering well, thanks to efforts started in 1978 with an agreement between US, Canada, and Norway. It became more global in 1989 when the Montreal Protocol took effect.
Today, “This progress should be celebrated as a timely reminder of what can be achieved when the international community works together to address global environmental challenges...”
Ahem, climate change, anyone?
Anyone???

The 2025 Antarctic #OzoneHole closed today, 1 Dec. – the earliest since 2019 and the smallest & shortest-lived in 5 years. Do you know how #CopernicusAtmosphere tracks ozone hole development? Or how global efforts are making a difference?

@semafor
I forget what #Conservative talking-head brought it up, but one of them said a year or two ago in an attempt to dismiss concern over #ClimateChange:"Remember back in the 90's when everyone was concerned about The #OzoneHole? What happened to that?"
Someone on Twitter tried to "Gotcha" me with that question. I responded:
"We fixed it. We banned CFC's nearly world wide and now it's shrinking instead of growing."
They never challenged me again. 😉

"The problem is that deploying massive constellations of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites that have a typical lifetime of 5 years can load up the mesosphere with the metal oxides upon their reentry, and there will be a lag of 20 or 30 years before gravity pulls these oxides down into the ozone layer which they can then severely degrade."

In the interests of my resolution to not spread bad news, here's something positive - looks like the #Antarctic #OzoneHole is getting smaller.
My ace colleagues @dmidk have a webpage they update regularly on this stuff: http://psc.dmi.dk/antarctica/ -
The 2024 Antarctic #ozonehole has persisted throughout November following its average development up to that point. The stratospheric polar vortex is predicted to breakdown in early December bringing it to a close.

The 2024 Antarctic #ozonehole continues its fairly average development, unlike the large ozone holes from previous years, declining very steadily since mid-October.
Is this a sign of recovery? We answered this question in this article: https://atmosphere.copernicus.eu/slow-start-2024-ozone-hole?utm_source=socialmedia&utm_medium=ma&utm_id=news-ozone-hole-0924

Good news everyone!
The ozone hole looks like it's on the mend! Estimates are that by 2066 it will recover to its 1980 levels over Antarctica.
The Montreal Protocol, which limited production of ozone depleting chemicals, came into effect Jan 1989, took 30+ years to start working and it might be 70 years to fully repair the damage.
The bad news? We haven't started making serious inroads on curbing climate change!
-
Proof that #EnvironmentalPolicy works: "During the peak of #ozone depletion season, the 2024 area of the #OzoneHole ranked the seventh smallest since recovery began in 1992, when the #MontrealProtocol, a landmark international agreement to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals, began to take effect."

People remember leaded petrol right? And the hole in the ozone layer?
Did you know they were caused by the same guy?
Who gave himself lead poisoning demonstrating leaded gasoline was "safe"?
Strangled to death by an adjustable bed of his own invention?

"Using a chemistry-transport model we find that air-pollution ozone enhancements in the troposphere spill over into the stratosphere at significant rates, that is, 13%–34% of the excess tropospheric burden appears in the lowermost extra-tropical stratosphere... we should recognize that two tenths of that recovery may come from the transport of increasing tropospheric ozone into the stratosphere."

About that ozone hole..
Doesn't seem to be healing very fast - not due to #CFCs necessarily but a quirk of the #Climate system means a colder #Stratosphere - which is delaying things.
Really good piece from my colleagues at DMI on it (in danish but DeepL works really well for translation):

The large and persistent 2023 #OzoneHole finally closed on Dec 20, after a series of surprising twists 🌐. The reasons behind this behaviour remain unclear but point to #climatechange or volcanic emissions.

🌍 Antarctica's sesonal ozone hole is 3x the size of Brazil this year! 😱
Surprisingly, research suggests the 2022 Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption sent massive quantity of water vapor in the air could be a significant factor behind this enlargement not only human activity for once.

The #CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service 5-day forecast of total column ozone over the #SouthPole initialized on 1 December 00 UTC showing the final stages(?) of the 2022 #OzoneHole as it drifts away from the pole and gradually disappearing. This has been the third year in a row of the ozone hole persisting throughout November due to cold and persistent #Polar Vortex.
