The rain hadn’t let up over Friday Harbor when I wandered into San Juan Island Brewing Co. for an early chat. Inside was all warmth — discussing changes since the pandemic including sourdough pizzas, the support of locals and toursists, while inspiring easy laughter from co-owner Sean Aylward and head brewer Jesse Visciglia.
We talked about island life, small-batch creativity, and what it takes to maintain a sense of community.
I tried their Chicken Bacon Blue and a special order pepperoni pizza, both perfect alongside a cold glass of San Juan Pilsner while the rain kept tapping on the windows.
This morning, as we leave Friday Harbor, we recognize that sometimes the best mornings aren’t bright — they’re the ones wrapped in gray skies, good stories, and a sense of place. 🌧️🍕🍺

Three wise birds.
I found a way down to the pond across the way. I tried to get closer to the birds down there, but alas the birds turned out to be pretty shy and most left the pond as I got closer. I felt like I was intruding, which in fact, I was. There were three great egrets (Ardea alba) at the pond and they all flew to the top of a pine tree. The ducks remained for a while, but as I approached closer to the far end of the pond, they started leaving as well. Ony the lesser yellowlegs stayed at the pond but they moved to the opposite side of the pond from where I was.
"Though it mainly hunts while wading, the Great Egret occasionally swims to capture prey or hovers (somewhat laboriously) over the water and dips for fish." - allaboutbirds.org
