The rain hadn’t let up over Friday Harbor when I wandered into San Juan Island Brewing Co. for an early chat. Inside was all warmth — discussing changes since the pandemic including sourdough pizzas, the support of locals and toursists, while inspiring easy laughter from co-owner Sean Aylward and head brewer Jesse Visciglia.
We talked about island life, small-batch creativity, and what it takes to maintain a sense of community.
I tried their Chicken Bacon Blue and a special order pepperoni pizza, both perfect alongside a cold glass of San Juan Pilsner while the rain kept tapping on the windows.
This morning, as we leave Friday Harbor, we recognize that sometimes the best mornings aren’t bright — they’re the ones wrapped in gray skies, good stories, and a sense of place. 🌧️🍕🍺

Big 4.8 #earthquake shook our house for 30 seconds & it woke me up. The #epicenter of this quake, that happened a few minutes ago, is #FridayHarbor in Washington. It felt closer than that. Our house in #Saanich shook harder & longer than last quake that happened just last week. These larger quakes are scaring me/my family with their increasing frequency & higher Richter scale numbers.

#Anacortes/#SanJuanIslands route on 2-boat service for rest of night. We will not take any vehicle reservation holders after 7p & no longer taking new standby vehicles out of #Anacortes, #OrcasIsland & #FridayHarbor to help those waiting at terminals get to their destinations.

#Chelan has been towed out of #FridayHarbor and is en route to #Anacortes. #Salish is heading up to the #SanJuanIslands and will begin service as the Interisland boat beginning with the 215p sailing out of Friday Harbor.

We’re waiting for final Coast Guard approval to tow #Chelan out of #FridayHarbor tomorrow morning 8/22. At the same time, we’re working on crewing a replacement vessel to move north so we can resume #SanJuanIslands Interisland service by the end of the day tomorrow.

During inspection of #Chelan, divers found hull damage, which requires dry docking for repairs. We're working with Coast Guard on permission to tow boat out of #FridayHarbor & clearance for another vessel to serve #SanJuanIslands interisland route, which remains out of service.

We're working with the Coast Guard on investigating what led to the incident. Because there is only 1 tie-up slip at #FridayHarbor, our #SanJuanIslands Interisland route will remain out of service until #Chelan is cleared to move. That's when we plan to move another vessel there.

#Chelan likely hit the shoreline last night in Wasp Passage on #SanJuanIslands Interisland route w/4 passengers aboard. No one hurt. Boat returned to #OrcasIsland for initial assessment. Coast Guard approved vessel to go to #FridayHarbor, where it remains for further inspection.

#Chelan cleared by Coast Guard to return sail to #FridayHarbor. Vessel (and Interisland service) will be out of service until further notice to start the day Monday.

#Chelan interisland sailing to #FridayHarbor has returned to #OrcasIsland due to a mechanical issue. No other vessels can dock at Orcas until boat is cleared to sail by the Coast Guard.
