  6. Good morning. 🪿🪿🦢

    28 March 2026

I’m just easing into the morning with my first cup of coffee. I can always tell when I’m taking too long to gather my thoughts—my coffee starts to cool before I’ve said anything worth saying.

Last night I finished Blue Moon by Lee Child, a Jack Reacher novel from one of my favorite series. I have most of the books on audio, and for years they were narrated by Dick Hill, who passed away a couple of years ago. Over time, Hill’s voice became Jack Reacher for me, and while I was reading this one, I kept trying to hear that familiar “Reacher voice” in my head. Scott Brick—one of my favorite audiobook narrators—has taken over since Hill’s passing, but after so many years of Hill’s Reacher, it’s just not quite the same.

Since I don’t drive as much anymore, I decided to order a hardback of a recent Reacher book. That plan didn’t go quite the way I expected, because it turns out I’d already read—or listened to—Blue Moon. I’m not sure why the title didn’t ring a bell when I ordered it. Still, it worked out. I didn’t remember most of the details, and I always feel like you catch more of the story when you read it yourself. I enjoyed the book, but next time I’ll do a better job checking which ones I already own.

The story pits Reacher against two rival organized‑crime groups in a city he just happens to wander into. As for who wins—well, if you know Jack Reacher, those guys were doomed the moment they crossed him.

Blue Moon is the 25th Reacher novel. If you’re curious about where it all begins, the first book is The Killing Floor.

“Get your retaliation in first” - Jack Reacher

“You can’t reason with a bully. You stop him.” - Jack Reacher

"Reacher said nothing." - Lee Child

  10. @mitch

No question that these baby birds are one step away from baby dinosaurs. 🙂

This is a #GreatEgret chick tossed out of its nest by its siblings (while the parents watched and did nothing). We witnessed the whole thing from our kayaks and I pulled it out of the water almost comatose. Just warming up in the sun did it some good. We are fortunate to have a local volunteer animal rescue so I think it survived.

Things I learned from them: 1) That's normal green skin color for egrets even the adults. 2) All adult wading birds are faster than you think. 3) Their necks are longer than your arm, and 4) They go for the eyes! Be cautious if rescuing such a bird!

Months later I attended a presentation about bird rookeries in the #Everglades. The scientists told us that having a sacrificial chick is sort of "baked in" for these #birds. They favor tall trees (bald cypress) growing in water because the resident #alligators help stop nest predators like raccoons and snakes. The birds basically yield up one of their own to keep the gators patrolling below their nests.

  11. Good morning. 😴🥱☕

    7 February 2026

I woke up groggy and disoriented, which isn’t unusual when I fall asleep in my chair. The TV was still on but silent, and Charlie was sitting in front of me, staring like he’d been waiting for me to rejoin the living. I rubbed my eyes, stood, and made my way through the house toward the bedroom, Charlie padding along behind me.

My wife was in front of the mirror doing something with her hair. “I fell asleep,” I said. She glanced over and smiled, but didn’t say a word. That alone was strange—she’s usually quick with a comment.

I headed into the bathroom and turned on the shower. When I looked back through the doorway, Charlie was sitting exactly where I’d been standing, watching my wife. He was perfectly still except for that black border collie tail, curved up with the white tip held like a little flag.

The shower felt good—narrow jets of hot water working into my neck and shoulders—so I stayed longer than usual, letting the heat soak through me. When I finished, I pulled on a T‑shirt and gym shorts and headed back toward my chair.

Down the hall, through the kitchen, into the family room—and then I froze. Because there I was, still lying back in my recliner, wearing the old blue jeans and olive drab work shirt I’d had on all day.

I wasn’t shocked or scared. My first thought was simply, Well, will you look at that. Hadn’t my wife just seen me walk through the bedroom? Or had she only reacted to Charlie? Then another thought drifted in: Well, there it is. Apparently life doesn’t go on after all.

Of course, none of this happened. But it felt like the start of a pretty good ghost story.

  12. Great Egret Hunting For Brunch

One lesson on birding that pops into my head every time I go out is, "You're not done till you're back at the car".

So many times I've spotted either more birds or nice compositions like this Great Egre

I took this photo in Georgia a few years back. It captures a juvenile white ibis (Eudocimus albus) and a great egret (Ardea alba) feeding together in a shallow pond.

  16. Some pics from a quick bike ride between Willow Pond and Grant Park in Hewlett, NY, about 1/4 mile from each other. The juvie Bald Eagle actually made its appearance at Willow, then circled over Grant. The egret at Willow looked up when the eagle did its fairly close flyover, but it was surprising that the ducks and geese didn't panic.
