  1. I started out with a #CAD model of the entire instrument. At the same time, I gathered all of the hardware parts and wood blanks (and modified the model accordingly). One important thing I learned at YouTube University: Have your parts ready when designing the instrument. It definitely helped a lot and probably avoided countless mistakes.

I was using #FLOSS software exclusively (save for the operating system) - #Dune3D for modelling, #FreeCAD for CAM, #OpenBuilds and #FluidNC for machine control.

So, how do you draw the shape of an instrument from scratch? Turns out it's really complicated to come up with something aesthethically pleasing. My first attempts didn't look very promising, so I decided to go with something tried-and-true and just settled for a #Jazzmaster (which earned the project the nickname "Jazz Apprentice").

  6. Oh no, Openbuilds goes out of business 😓

The CEO Mark Carew invented the V-Slot extrusion in 2013. We use them on the Bear because the V shape offered an easy alignment during the assembly and more flexibility for the printed parts (no support needed).

Everything must go, check them out:

Thank you Openbuilds and the community for those 12 years 🙏❤️

  11. Big plotter so much closer to operation after this weekend! Even with all that shelving I'll run out of room for pens. I can't wait to be up and running.

  16. Step 1 is done. It took 32 hours of carving, 37 if you count mistakes. Next up I need to sand it to get rid of the fuzzy fibers leftover from carving, then stain it and then figure out what I want to do to protect it. #cnc #lotr #openbuilds

  17. Really struggling to get the 1300kbs render settings to work with Mastodon and not have the video look like its been pixelated to protect its identity. New tactile braille sculpture on my open source CNC, with a lot of mess ups from the double sided tape not adhering. #GRBL #CNC #openbuilds #opensourcehardware #tactileart #tactilesculpture #cncrouter #braille #walnut #woodworking #art #sculpture #woodcarving
