  1. The volute (neck profile to headstock transition) ended up being less troublesome, mostly because I previously found a good tutorial video on modelling a volute which unfortunately got lost in my browser history. The trick: Make the first-fret neck profile spread out towards the headstock in a cone-like shape, add a generous fillet for a smooth transition to the length of the neck, then remove everything that extends beyond the headstock outline.

Fun fact: I would have hit a major roadblock in #Dune3D if I had started working on the neck just a few weeks earlier because the loft operation had only been added very recently.

  4. Shouldn't I be able to get away with taking some Jazzmaster drawings and scaling them down a bit? Well, yes, but no. I had a few hard constraints that I needed to incorporate.

First, the bridge that I used (a cheap Chinese one, basically the only model of 4-string bridge that you'll get everywhere) limited the design to a specific maximum string spacing. Second, I insisted on adding a truss rod, so there wasn't that much wiggle room in terms of scale length. Third, the headstock needed to be shaped and spaced in a way to still allow for four tuners.

In the end, I came up with this reference sketch in #Dune3D.

  7. I started out with a #CAD model of the entire instrument. At the same time, I gathered all of the hardware parts and wood blanks (and modified the model accordingly). One important thing I learned at YouTube University: Have your parts ready when designing the instrument. It definitely helped a lot and probably avoided countless mistakes.

I was using #FLOSS software exclusively (save for the operating system) - #Dune3D for modelling, #FreeCAD for CAM, #OpenBuilds and #FluidNC for machine control.

So, how do you draw the shape of an instrument from scratch? Turns out it's really complicated to come up with something aesthethically pleasing. My first attempts didn't look very promising, so I decided to go with something tried-and-true and just settled for a #Jazzmaster (which earned the project the nickname "Jazz Apprentice").

  12. TIL that when you create a new sketch group in #Dune3D you can just pick one of the default workplanes as a reference instead of creating an overlapping one and that made me happy

  17. Has anyone installed the cad software #dune3d on #ubuntu ? I tried following the instructions on their website, but was inundated with errors. Any hints would be appreciated.
    Ps I am a HUGE #Linux newbie!

    Next day,
OK, I figured it out. Learned I needed to install Flatpak and the all was well!

  27. Testing #Dune3d for a functional part, it's made great strides since I last tried it a couple of years ago!

  32. From CAD to print — realize your ideas with @karotte’s #Dune3D ! This one holds all my camera auxiliaries (batteries, charger, SD cards) in one neat package :)

(yes, the wrong depth on those battery slots is entirely due to chaos.social/@filmroellchen/11 )

    Edit: Link vergessen. dune3d.org

  39. #Dune3D kann man auch perfekt missbrauchen um zu konstruieren, wo man zum Bilder aufhängen bohren sollte 😅

  44. #Dune3D is amazing, and each time I open it after a few months it has gotten better. Really awesome software.
