  1. I started out with a #CAD model of the entire instrument. At the same time, I gathered all of the hardware parts and wood blanks (and modified the model accordingly). One important thing I learned at YouTube University: Have your parts ready when designing the instrument. It definitely helped a lot and probably avoided countless mistakes.

I was using #FLOSS software exclusively (save for the operating system) - #Dune3D for modelling, #FreeCAD for CAM, #OpenBuilds and #FluidNC for machine control.

So, how do you draw the shape of an instrument from scratch? Turns out it's really complicated to come up with something aesthethically pleasing. My first attempts didn't look very promising, so I decided to go with something tried-and-true and just settled for a #Jazzmaster (which earned the project the nickname "Jazz Apprentice").

  6. Just installed a set of bridge cables… erm, I mean baritone guitar strings… on my standard #Jazzmaster, and have a stable “B standard” tuning. I’ve made a baby #baritone guitar. This is very twangy.

  7. Born this day in 1909 Leo Fender. Founder of Fender Musical Instruments. In 1950 the company released the Esquire, a thin body, fast neck electric that wouldn't feedback when played at volume of dance halls. Adding a second pick-up in '51 we had the Broadcaster which became the Telecaster. Still one of the most popular electric guitars for any genre.

Need I say the sounds we hear today might be very different if not for Leo Fender. What does a Fender Stratocaster sound like when played through a Fender Champ amp? Listen to Clapton on "Layla".

  8. I ended up taking this to my guitar tech, who fixed the nut in about 20 seconds with a nut file (it was indeed badly cut).

I played it for a bit but decided I didn't quite "get" it - it wasn't clicking for me.

And then, I tuned it to drop C and tried some old Deftones tunes.

OK, *now* I get what this guitar is about.

  13. Worth mentioning that I have made sure I put the same string gauge on as Fender do from the factory (10s). #fender #jazzmaster #guitar

  14. Just to be clear, I’m not complaining considering this guitar effectively cost me about £2 in tickets! I’m just curious. #fender #jazzmaster

  15. A few weeks ago I won a (used) Jim Root signature #fender #jazzmaster. Lucky me! I have only just had the time to give it a bit of a setup.

I think I’d be a bit annoyed if I’d bought this instrument from new (£1600 from Fender).

    * There’s a clear mark on the fretboard at the 10th & 11th frets where it looks like the fret was to be cut (in the wrong place)
    * I think the nut is cut too low on the high E string leading to first fret buzz on the open string
    * Fretwork is mediocre quality - similar to my RG550, but way below my other Ibanez guitars and even my Charvel.

Fender players - is this normal QC for Fender? I’ve never had a Fender guitars before.

  16. Ok. Die Midlife Crisis hat mich fest im Griff: Ich habe mir eine dieser neumodischen elektrischen Gitarren gekauft 😎 Meine erste Gitarre seit ~30 Jahren, ich bin sehr aufgeregt.

  19. Up next is the guitar of mine that is probably my favorite, but don't tell the others: REY (of the #StarWars Sequel trilogy fame; she was named in December of 2015 so you do the math).

Rey is a Squier Vintage Modified #Jazzmaster and is the guitar that really began my love affair with #Fender offsets. I replaced the stock pickups with a Fender Pure Vintage '65 set and honestly it might be one of the best decisions I've ever made. This guitar does all the alt rock/indie punk stuff I could ever ask for as well as basically everything else I can throw at it. This was another impulse layaway purchase, but I don't regret a single thing. It does make me feel a bit tiny to play, but that's not always a bad thing :3 The body is just so massive compared to my other guitars, and the Fender scale length doesn't do it any favors in that department. I've thought about other upgrades, but I've always decided against them because Rey is perfect the way she is <3

  25. Semi-Hollow JazzMaster Bass VI Build Update:

    It’s finally nearing completion!

    Recent progress:
Drilled holes for pots and output jack.
So much sanding, up to 320 grit. Applied several coats of Z-poxy as sealant/pore filler. Then more sanding.
Sprayed many thin coats of 2K ClearMax Gloss finish.
More interminable (wet) sanding up to 2000 grit. Polishing.

  27. Does anyone know of a #jazzmaster clone #guitar that has a wide neck? I have an #Eart #335 and I love the neck! It has a 9.5’-14’compound radius. Looking for a #Fender style with a neck like that. ✌️🎸

  38. My wife is so cool. When my Les Paul got trashed during some recent renovation work. She felt so bad for me that when our rebate check came from taxes, she told me to get a new guitar and amp to play it on. So I got a cool #Jazzmaster from #fender_guitars and sick digital modeling amp from the geniuses over at Boss. My new Katana Artiste Mark II 100 watter is coming tomorrow and I cannot wait! #guitarGear

  39. For the #guitar nerds on here. This is a #Jazzmaster / #Telecaster / Travis Bean /EGC hybrid my friend Randy at King Electric Guitars built for me. The body is sapele and zebrawood inspired by the 70’s era Kramer.

Yes it is very heavy, but well balanced - so I never really notice the weight. Pickups are a TV Jones Ray Butts Filter’tron in the neck position and a Lolar Vintage T bridge position. Electronic controls are flipped. And it can intonate down to C Standard if desired.
