needing to expand (re-develop) its field interview teams, the ONS is having difficulty getting them up to full minimum complement to complete surveys behind the Labour Force Survey as well as other data gathering, partly because of increasing hostility by the public to be interviewed by ONS surveyors.
As society becomes more defensive so people value their privacy more?

I have no reason to disbelieve these #statistics, so why does it seem there are so many #murders in #news?
near 500 is still more than one every day, but another factor is delays between an incident and subsequent investigation and Court cases, and when a case is in Court same #crime will repeatedly appear in the news - its easy to double count incidents.
Also 30-40 years ago it wasn't quite as easy to see news from a region many miles away from your home area, but today "local" news sites fill up the space with crime reports from other areas.
This must impact a lot on fear of crime amongst those who aren't paying close attention..

Interestingly, Patrick Jenkins' (FT) discussion the myriad failures at the Office of National Statistics, notes that the 'well-intentioned' move of the ONS from London to Newport, Wales involved the loss of around 90% if its London based staff...
While his criticism of management at & funding of the ONS are on the button, the idea that failures are due to a lack of good staff in Wales is (as it was when it was originally made in 2016), a classic bit of London-based prejudice!

Given the labour force survey is a key element of the job data which is used by the Govt (but also the Bank of England, when setting interest rates), this is really pretty poor.

More on the crises engulfing the Office of National Statistics:
To free up staff to work to rectify problems in a range of economic data, perhaps most obviously the now unreliable Labour Force Survey, the ONS is puling staff off work on health & crime statistics. It is also looking to pause it annual local survey efforts from which much data on inequality is derived.
While we need good (better) economic data this should at the cost of vital crime & health statistics.

As the Office of National Statistics struggles to regain confidence in its statistical work, a recent report suggests the next census needs a better model for assessing a range of gender gaps in its data.
Specifically this should enable the ONS to get better information on how un-paid care is patterned (given most, but not all, is delivered by women). There's also a need for more fine-grained analysis of occupations to capture gender disparities.

I'm a data point for ONS. Got interviewed today in the random sample of households for the Crime Survey for England and Wales.
UK peeps, please report the racist flaggers.
It turned out there was no coded entry for flaggers under antisocial behaviour in this 2025 questionnaire (like, red-stripes-on-a-white-roundabout graffiti). And, yes, I failed the question about "did I report it".

The crisis at the UK's Office of National Statistics seems to have been at least partly driven by a complete lack of a recruitment & workforce management strategy... part of the solution is that Labour has now appointed Darren Tierney to the new role of ONS permanent secretary, with a direct responsibility for dealing with the ONS management culture & practice.
