The Oxford University Museum of Natural History is today's #MidweekMuseum and it's a place worth seeing for the building itself as much as the exhibits. It's a great example of Victorian Neo-Gothic design in iron and glass. There are some lovely pieces to see in the museum, of course, but we took most joy in being allowed to touch the 4.5 billion years old Nantan iron meteorite.

My #MidweekMuseum today is the #Vasa #Museum in #Stockholm, #Sweden. Vasa was a 17th century #warship, intended to be the flagship of a squadron based in the Swedish Archipelago, but she was over-designed to be dangerously top-heavy by the king, Gustavus Adolphus, sailed out before a watching crowd, caught a small breeze, flooded through the open gun ports, and sank into mud that preserved her this well.

My #MidweekMuseum recommendation is Zadar Archaeological Museum. If you like Roman artifacts in very good condition and the sense of stepping back in time when you're up close to them then this is a great place to explore, and right outside the museum are more ruins of pillars than you can shake a historical stick at in the old Roman Forum.

My #MidweekMuseum today is the Norsk Folkemuseum (or Norwegian Museum of Cultural History) at Bygdøy in Oslo, Norway. It's an open-air museum housing dozens of historical buildings relocated to this area for preservation, and home of the Gol Stave Church (circa 1200 CE), one of three stave churches we've now visited in Norway when travelling. Who doesn't love a stave church?

My #MidweekMuseum today is the Centre for Computing History (or Computer Museum) in Cambridge. I took so few photos when we visited here because we were so busy playing games or trying to remember some BASIC or COBOL, or, in the case of vintage machines like the IMSAI 8080 that was used in the movie WarGames, simply enjoying the sound and feel of flicking the switches. Stupidly fun feast of nostalgia.

My #MidweekMuseum this week is #Arundells in #Salisbury, the former home of former UK Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath. He was Conservative but before you immediately start booing and throwing things at your screen, he didn't like Thatcher, was very pro-European, was strongly anti-Nazi following his wartime experiences. He still had some "Ah, not so good" moments because he was a politician but the house is fascinating and the garden incredible; well worth a visit.

This week's #MidweekMuseum recommendation - after a short break - is the Nonsense Museum in Ísafjörður, Iceland. This is a museum dedicated to collections of collections. The pictures here show alcohol miniatures, playing cards, police helmets, shot glasses, Pez dispensers, and perfume testers, but there were also airplane models, pens, cigarette packets, monkeys, spoons, and more. All fascinating and fun nonsense.

Today's #MidweekMuseum is Bangsbo Fort and Bunker Museum, located in Frederikshavn, Denmark. This World War 2 structure is a series of wartime bunkers built as part of Germany's Atlantic Wall coastal defences. Fabulous views out from this high vantage point, and the various bunkers you can enter and large guns you can see up close give a good feel for conditions of the time.

#MidweekMuseum moves to #Oxford this week and the #Ashmolean #Museum. Oxford isn't short of museums to visit, but if you're going to just see one of them then this is probably the most famous in the city and the one you're most likely to hit. Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Assyrian artifacts will satisfy your deep historical cravings and there is plenty for fans of paintings and objects such as violins and timepieces too.

This week's #MidweekMuseum is the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Dulles, Washington, part of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. This was the year I went to America and left my camera at home so excuse the old Nokia phone shots. Some incredible craft to see, spent ages looking, and pictured here are an early MiG jet fighter, the Enola Gay, an SR-71 Blackbird, and the Space Shuttle Discovery.

My #MidweekMuseum recommendation this week is #Laufás folk and heritage #museum in #Iceland, not too far from #Akureyri in the north of the country. This is not your normal turf house, as it was a wealthy manor house and vicarage. There's a church there you can visit too, but the house is the main star, and is TARDIS-like in its size inside with corridors and rooms off everywhere in the grassy landscape.

My #MidweekMuseum post this week is the Museo do Pobo Galego, which if you're ever visiting #SantiagoDeCompostela I highly recommend. Not only super cheap, not only a very interesting look at the Galician way of life and language, but the building is a former convent, includes a church, folk and art exhibitions, and some incredible triple helix stairs designed to confuse visitors. Worth a visit for those stairs alone.

This week's #MidweekMuseum recommendation is just a ten-minute walk from our house, and it's the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum. We've lived in Portsmouth all our lives but it took until 2017 for us to finally pop in and see the home that the famous author was born in. Dickens wouldn't have known much about the house or city as his family left when he was three, but it's a lovely Victorian home to nose around, nonetheless.

My #MidweekMuseum recommendation this week is the best #museum in the world, hands down. This is the Museum of Everyday Life in Ísafjörður, #Iceland. It's a feast for the senses. Touch wool. Look at old photos and read local people's memories of the day. Hold old shoes and listen to Icelanders recall a story about the shoe on old phones. Unscrew jars and smell memory items (school crayons, seaweed, socks, etc.). Small, perfect, just fantastic.

My #MidweekMuseum recommendation today is a series of locations dotted across #Lisbon in #Portugal that together make up the Museu da Água, or #WaterMuseum. Pictured here is the impressive Águas Livres #Aqueduct (from which great views of the city can be had), the Mãe d’Água and the Reservatório da Patriarcal #reservoirs, and the latter's 400 metre long #tunnel that makes its way under the city to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara.

This week's #MidweekMuseum recommendation is the UK's National Space Centre in #Leicester. We popped in here on the way back home from Yorkshire back in 2011 simply because we spotted the sign on the motorway and fancied a driving break, and a very enjoyable one it was too. Fabulous building designed by the same people responsible for the Eden Project, and great exhibitions, including a Soyuz 7K-OK.

For #MidWeekMuseum this week, I bring you the Guggenheim in Bilbao. The modern #art inside the museum is spectacular but pales in comparison to the #architecture of the building itself. As an added bonus, Bilbao is a fantastic foodie destination in #Spain

My #MidweekMuseum recommendation today comes from #Iceland, and #Reykjavik in particular, and it's the Icelandic #Punk #Museum. We missed going here the first two times we hit the capital but finally made it last year. Inside a former public toilet accessed down steps in the street it's a hot, cramped, dirty, noisy, thoroughly entertaining experience, curated by a proper character of the punk scene. Posters, history, listen to tracks, wear the jackets. Great.

My #MidweekMuseum recommendation today is the Museo del Recuerdo (or Museum of Memories) in Punta Arenas, Chile. This is an open air museum of old residential and commercial buildings and equipment that we visited in 2016. We were treated to some traditional music and dancing upon our arrival.

One of our most-visited #museums for this week's #MidweekMuseum recommendation, because it's fairly close to us. This is #Beaulieu, both the home of the national #CarMuseum and also a medieval house, extensive grounds, abbey ruins, and a monorail. If you like #cars then this is the place to go. Everything from the earliest motors up to the latest Formula 1 vehicles.

This week's #MidweekMuseum recommendation is #Kristiansand #Museum in #Norway. This is an open air museum with houses and buildings mostly from the 1800s, but with a few older buildings and farmsteads; the oldest building here dates to 1585. The structures would have been demolished where they were, but were preserved and moved to this location to visit.

Persevering with my #MidweekMuseum recommendation until I forget or run out, here's the #Guggenheim #Museum in #Bilbao, #Spain. You can appreciate the #FrankGehry #architecture even if you don't like the #ModernArt the building houses, but we loved both. You're only allowed to take photos inside the entrance hall, but outside I've got some shots of artworks by #AnishKapoor, #JeffKoons, and, of course, #Maman by #LouiseBourgeois.

My #MidweekMuseum recommendation - even though it doesn't feel like midweek - is the Pre-Columbian #Gold #Museum in #SanJosé, #CostaRica. A below-ground museum with gorgeous #brutalist concrete chambers housing gold coins and sculptures, and other artifacts from the period of about 500CE until us Europeans came and made a mess of things.
