  1. This mourning hall was built in the 1890s, and has a Neo-Gothic architectural style. The long corridor is lined with cubicles. Each one is partitioned by metal walls, with a matching metal door.

Inside each is a low stone slab with a stained glass window to provide natural light. In these cubicles, the family and friends could say goodbye to the deceased in private.

  11. Soap king
    A #poem

    Alabaster king
    with white chiseled beard
    all alone standing:
    Once he was feared —

    — built himself a church
    with gold roof adorned.
He stands there on his perch
with a fake crown of thorns.

    Once made of granite,
    now he’s soft as soap.
    Distant as a planet
    from light years ago.

    Put aside all fear
    of this forgot prince.
    Outwait him for some years:
Just for fools does his gold glint.

  12. Tinseltower
    A #poem in two parts

    i.

A tinpot tyrant built a tower tall,
clad in gold and granite and all.

This motte and bailey mocked the skies,
mocked the peasants who’d helped him rise.

Reflected in wide moat’s black waters
he saw a king or khan — not the paupers —

and ruled his lands to rack and ruin
until he faced his own perdition.

  14. The Oxford University Museum of Natural History is today's #MidweekMuseum and it's a place worth seeing for the building itself as much as the exhibits. It's a great example of Victorian Neo-Gothic design in iron and glass. There are some lovely pieces to see in the museum, of course, but we took most joy in being allowed to touch the 4.5 billion years old Nantan iron meteorite.
