Just finished reading the third in the #Apollo Murders series by Canadian polymath Chris #Hadfield. I’ve very much enjoyed the first two and the third is just as good; possibly even a titch better.
I sincerely hope he writes more, even if not in the same series. He’s got great skill at the thriller genre; at the same level as Bagley or Deighton. He’s just that good.
Honestly, Commander Hadfield is seemingly able to perfectly do anything he puts his hand to. Novelist, astronaut and ISS commander, fighter test pilot, musician (he did a Bowie cover IN SPACE!!), author of a children’s book and his memoirs, owns a 55 T-Bird and Piper Comanche which get used regularly… Honestly, he’s making the rest of us look bad and needs to do something poorly! Bah!
I’m kidding, but he does seem to be perfect at anything he puts his mind to.
Read these books. You’ll thank me later.
Very highly recommended

Did Russia accidentally destroy its ability to send cosmonauts into space?
On 27 November, Russia launched a Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station.
Since then, news articles claim that it accidentally destroyed its only launch pad capable of sending humans into space.
Roscosmos said it would repair the damage "shortly", but analysts doubt this is doable in less than a few months if not years.
France 24 takes a closer look.

On November 27th, Russia launched a Soyuz rocket to the International Space Station. Since then, news articles claim that Moscow has accidentally destroyed its only launch pad capable of sending humans into space. According to experts looking at the footage, this is true. Roscosmos said it would repair the damage "shortly", but analysts doubt this is doable in less than a few months if not years. We take a closer look in this edition of Truth or Fake.

🇷🇺 #Baikonur : There's significant #damage to the maintenance cabin, which is too extensive to allow for repairs. The only way to resume launches is to install a spare maintenance cabin or construct a new one. Similar service cabins were manufactured recently for other #Soyuz launch complexes at the #Guiana Space Center and #Vostochny Cosmodrome. The production of each cabin took around two years ⏳🥱 to complete https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2025/11/site-31-accident/

"Before a Soyuz launch Thursday someone forgot to secure a 20-ton service platform" by @arstechnica / @sciguyspace - Damage to Russian launch Site 31 at Baikonur leaves questions whether Russia has resources and political will to repair their only pad that can launch crew & cargo to #ISS. This means a gap in, maybe the end of Russian Soyuz & Progress launches to ISS. In turn that may test how long #NASA can sustain ISS without refueling by Progress ships. https://arstechnica.com/space/2025/11/russian-launch-pad-incident-raises-concerns-about-future-of-space-station/ #Soyuz #space

"the three #cosmonauts would have had a good chance of returning in the broken #Soyuz. Like me, #ChrisHadfield expressed his basic confidence in the Soyuz.
Pretty much all important functions can be triggered by the crew. For all points in time, e.g. for igniting the jets, a table is sent up daily, which is printed out and kept in the Soyuz. I can't say in detail whether the cruise engine overheats in the absence of cooling, but in simulations pretty much everything was played in for us and we still got as far as the upper atmosphere. From there on, the leaky cooling doesn't matter anyway. If there's a moisture problem in the capsule before the braking shock (that's where the cooling acts as a condensation surface) or it gets too hot, thanks to the Sokol #spacesuits you can deflate the air in the return capsule and come back under pure oxygen pressure. Very uncomfortable, but #doable. Soyuz is a life saver, not a limb saver, we were always told." -
Check out the guts of a #Soyuz mechanical navigation computer thought to be from the The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Apparently this style of nav computer was still used until ~2001.
It's an amazing piece of machinery which you can see for yourself on the #CuriousMarc channel, and read about in detail on Ken Shirriff's blog (@kenshirriff).
