Mecha Comet : The Comet’s April Voyage
I.MX95 Design close to completion
We’ve spent almost all of April getting the I.MX95 version of the mainboard to the finish line. We are now 7 days away from releasing to manufacturing. A couple of days, we have received review comments from NXP as well and are working to incorporate them. We have had some surprises lately, but things overall look good-to-go. -
@archivescribe @DaveMasonDotMe There's the #FLX1s from @furilabs
Also, upcoming projects from @mechasystems, @dawndrums and @Liberux
Of course, there's the #LibertyPhone / #Librem5 from @purism for true #gnuLinux... which I heard is receiving a new modem upgrade this year. That's what I'm currently daily driving with #postmarketOS.

Changed my order on the Mecha Comet. I've downgraded because a.) I can get by on lesser processor power at the moment b.) it won't suck the battery balls dry and c.) I'm impatient. #Mecha #MechaComet

@cryptica There's the #mechaComet over on kickstarter. It's not really designed as a phone-first device, but there's an option to have a built in lte modem. I'll bet someone will come along to create a software dialer for it.
best part is it's true linux, not some sort of frankenstein linux-ized android like the #flx1

@TexJoachim @TexJoachim @michal I remeber it as well, but as the device I always admired. Never owned it. But I was running Linux on my #PalmTX back then and it was great! Back then the main problem was getting the hardware supported and getting software to run with small amount of RAM. And limited amount of software and synchronization options. #MechaComet has up to 8G of RAM and it could run the desktop software which also matured quite a lot since then. And we have #Nextcloud 😉So times have changed and now it will be even better than it used to be. At least that is what I beleive.

During #FOSDEM I rediscovered #MechaComet. Cool #Linux 🐧 #handheld! It is currently running a #Kickstarter. So grab yours, while you can and if you want to know why I am so excited about it, check my blog 😉 https://michal.hrusecky.net/2026/02/mecha-comet/

Hi and welcome to the fediverse, @mechasystems :hamster_dance:
Could you consider focusing on an AI accelerator from a different producer than Hailo? Hailo are contributing to the genocide on palestinians, so your legitimising Hailo and supporting them economically puts an unfortunate stain on you and the #mechaComet as well.

This is *very* interesting - an open Linux, vaguely phone shaped, handheld computer.
I'm envisioning it being used as a general purpose computer and also as an on-the-road vpn tunneled vid/chat conferencing software point of presence.
I guess it could take phone calls as well if one was so inclined. Ha.
I'll guess getting all the things working on this would be straightforward with pmos.

What would be nice is if the Mecha Comet's LTE upgrade kit was described (more than that it exists) without having to seemingly first give money.

The 'AI accelerator' module @mechasystems are testing for the Mecha Comet is made by the militaristic Israeli AI firm Hailo [1,2].
The chairperson of Hailo was formerly president and CEO of the zionist Bank Leumi which contribute significantly to the decades-long colonisation and occupation of Palestinian land, and contributes significantly to Israels ongoing genocide of palestinians [3-5].
Bank Leumi is on the divestment shortlist of the BDS movement [6,7].Supporting and legitimising genocide is not cool of anybody. That includes producers of an otherwise very cool little Linux handheld device.

Meet the Mecha Comet: a modular, Linux handheld for tinkerers.
Snap-on modules, a Fedora-based OS, beautiful touch-centric interface built in Rust and running on Wayland.
Best bit? It's open source hardware /and/ software. Nice.

Finally I decided to get a Mecha Comet Linux Handheld.
Even without mobile connectivity* I think is the best Linux phone you can get.
It doesn't rely on Android, and they attempt to keep it as open as possible.
(*may be possible to add LTE/5G modem latter)

Likely due to recent RAM and flash price increases, the #MechaComet base model only ships with 2GB RAM, and going up to 8GB is only allowed when going with the faster i.MX 95 chip.
This makes the device more pricey than it may seem initially - and I sadly can't recommend going with 2GB, if you consider adding your own 4G module and browsing the web is part of your use-case. Thanks AI, I guess. #LinuxMobile

Mecha Comet modular Linux handheld hits Kickstarter for $189 and up
The Mecha Comet is a modular handheld Linux computer featuring a modular input section below a 3.92 inch AMOLED display, allowing you to swap out a QWERTY keyboard for a gamepad, I/O board, or other modules.
After first introducing the device a year ago, the makers of the Mecha Comet have now launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign with Early Bird reward levels starting at $189 for an […]
