Voila, here is your cool poem of the day: Danez Smith, Dinosaurs in the Hood

so filled with ire
my pen solely allows me
hollow bullet points
Snacking
Such sweet and voracious tearing,
rending then chewing cherry flesh
during the first read of a poem.
And for subsequent reads,
endlessly rolling the pit between tongue and roof,
saliva and friction removing every last morsel.
My poem for today’s #PoemsAbout prompt #Spectacle - hosted by @BrokenSpineArts over on BSky
Wrote this reflecting on an experience here in suburbia, walking home from a park and hearing a mysterious music in the air from no source I could identify.
let
the garden stay over
grown at least it
has grown into some
thing i keep receiving
pointless numbers
turn right in 400m
the road stops
in 200m 100 people
applauding me when i
drive off the
pier the harbor floor bleeds
petrol and then everyone
leaves
the city in the
end
Poem 27:
went to
clean the house
burned it down in
stead buddha screaming
at me keep
it simple you should
only own 6
things he must have
meant 5 matches and
a matchbox but thats
history now thats
to be written down and
forgotten
Poem 26:
some
one once told
me just pray and
i did and they
did answer and
love became hatred
became nothing and
rain fell at some
funeral and made
peoples clothes
heavy and no
one seem to
remember when i
ask why
Poem 25:
im
happy letters
dangling from a
tree a cat
under reaching for
them with her paw
like in some youtube
video we cant
spell anything
anymore but mind
less joy
Poem 22:
they
took our guitar
gave us a
rifle instead told
us to shoot the play
wright theres nothing
to sing about but
the alleys
echoing and mute
birds on the street
lights a bus
that leaves full
of people and
comes back empty
Poem21:
one
great man is
all it takes we
will spend our lives
waiting im
sitting on
a bench in the mall
browsing the page
of a supermarket on
my phone picturing a
truck dumping food into
the harbor a man standing
in front of me telling
me ill just have to
wait for my
chance
Poem 20:
what
has the world
come to an end
to all those
apocalyptic
prophecies people seem
to fear being alive
just to face some
one with a semi
automatic down the
mall or an elected push
ing the button more
than death
Poem 19:
some
one was singing
anti
war songs down
on the street
corner but no
one cares for music
anymore you can
win or lose in
a bet and you can
hope the bullet will
never reach the
chamber but you
cant outrun
what already
has been
written
Poem 17:
for
what it is
worth dont run
naked down the streets
with the air
raid sirens ripping
your flesh off down
to the bones stay
in bed and make that
last kiss
last in
stead
Poem 16:
if you
look close
enough patterns
will emerge re
calculating
trajectory a child
falling from an apple
tree symbols around
her neck a rattle
snake a scream
pounding leaves
into dust
Tuesday the Thirteenth:
two neighbors
fighting over a
peanut tree i rode
an elephant through
the city last night
people fled down the
streets screaming
like light
bulbs the sun was
long gone we
only had each other
left it turned
out to be the reality
we were facing
Gedicht Nummer elf
sing and
drown out the
loud silence youth
is sitting on a bench
at a parking lot listening
to a che guevara banner
fluttering from a dorm
window or the hollow sound
when hitting the crossbar of
a soccer goal
Gedicht Nummer zehn
see
right through
me like im a ghost
or a glass
of water the streets
are empty the mall
is overgrown branches
reach out
of the broken
windows i would
love to hear from
you again but then
again who
wouldnt
what would
the end of the
world look like
probably weird pale
people who havent
slept for weeks running
around on the streets
screaming i told you
so a stray cat sitting
on the hood of every
car birds nesting in
side your oven im fresh
out of the shower
just waiting for things
to happen
Poem8:
the great
man theory he will
come we just
have to
sit by at the
bar last night went
into a fight with
the union
steward he left
in an ambulance i
went home alone
bruised knuckles people
all fled to
the opposite pavement
none denied that thats
what strength is
Poem the sixth:
truth
or dare is a
zero sum game
your mom calling
you in for dinner im
standing on a
bridge throwing that
broken ghetto
blaster i just won
into the river
The fifth:
high pressure
economy im on the
bus on the way to
work neighbors on
the phone talking
about my demented
mother running naked
around on the
lawn outside the
house insanity is the
first step towards that
one idea that will
make you win in
this world
Poem the fourth
you
are a killer
we can see it in
your eyes you
can empty
a drugstore
and afford it every
thing you say we
believe in that's
who you
are
Poem the third:
you want
a clear view
mountain climbing crisp
snow rattling spruce on
the 75 inch this is
why we know about
love this is why
we yell
Poem something:
you want kids
then you want
food and health
good health you
want to live all
along but
thats not for
you to
decide
Dyslexia makes angles of angels
and vica-verce – haloed,
painted always by the late RMs with

while all the roads not taken,
taunt with unbroken blades
like defiling a cherub
with its bow drawn,
hovering.

busy night
rubber bumpers on swinging restaurant kitchen doors
a drunken boxer at a speed bag
dropping keys from my pocket
playing a crane game at 46
in gridlock traffic
a funeral procession
comes to a dead stop
overheard at a coffee shop
“I was in a coma for 17 days. They had my chest open for five days.”
To express the opening of his chest,
the man burst both hands
in obtuse angles –
one palm on each lung.
I just finished watching Alien
again
and even greater than that trauma,
thought,
And just imagine:
poets live like that.
Our greatest fear
is being sewn shut.
It just started to rain.
Clouds have been lowering, darkening
since my thoughts drifted to the distance
between your lips and mine.
Mark how my quivering chin
wrings sympathy
even from the heavens.
it's not forgetfulness,
the memories burrow.
it's instinct, you (don't) see:
Gods are shy,
and when they're born
inside a poet
DNA rewritten
to rewrite
everything,
they hoard,
only to release
at the proper
line.
often,
as I mount my chin
between my knees -
brought up like twin mountains
beneath my peak,

Your spare pair of sandals
under my bedside table,
a spare toothbrush
held close beside mine,
a foot in the door to which
you already own the keys.
not enough tender
kisses and cuddles offered
as apologies

dress up and
take me out

do not own

Perhaps Most of All
Sitting at a table
with everything ordered
within my reach
for a perfect Sunday morning,
I think of her
innate, unnameable sadness
and want to take that
too.
A poem I wrote many years ago:
Awakening
And when you realise
that I'm not the Messiah
And that the god has feet of clay
And in the sunrise
of all our tomorrows
When our paths may still lead stray
With the awakening of the sky
Will I be hearing your startled cry
When you see I am no lion
Will you reject me
Or give me boots of iron?

She is learning
Now
All the mediocrity
That comes from
Dating a poet and
Loving
Every minute of it.
I must stitch
These moments into memory
Before the lack of expiration
Date
Makes them spoil.

on turkey vultures

before an empty graveyard
closed for the season

How the corner of your lips
Curls into a Cheshire smile,
Previously puckered drapes part
As you beg me to
Pound harder,
Knowing my touch gentle by nature,
That I need to be told to be rough
Because studs are
Hidden behind drywall.
cold front bringing rain
frenzied squirrels foraging
under burning leaves
All my girlfriends
Who wear prescriptions
Take off their glasses
Then call me handsome
