  6. I bought the wrong color of grout by accident, but I've been putting off repairing a crack in the shower for weeks now so I just went for it. It was an easier process than I thought it might be, and now my first attempt stands out so I can see it and re-do it in the right color when I need another project.

for now, it should keep water from getting into the wall with any luck.

  7. HVAC repair guy came this morning to replace a part ordered a couple weeks ago. He found the old one still working fine from his previous tinkering. We decided against the new part, since I'll be replacing the boiler & hot water heater with a new single flash heater (wall mounted) soon. He put me in touch with their sales guy on the spot. Cost estimate being prepared.

  12. Edit: answered! thanks to @SCfastpicket

I can't decide if this is exactly the right place to ask this or totally wrong. We have a 4-gang switch box where we want to place three toggles and one decorator (paddle). The only plate I can find that has this puts the decorator opening on the side, but we would like it in one of the middle slots. So, is this available somewhere I'm not seeing? Has anyone cut a 4-toggle cover to fit a rocker and did it turn out OK? #homerepair #DIY #askfedi

  13. Rambling "How I Spent My ${DURATION}" braindump.

Last week I was carrying bags of water softener #salt into my furnace room and noticed a small #limescale deposit on the floor in the middle of the room that hadn't been there a few days before. Directly above it are a bunch of water #pipes going off in different directions. Found one 90 degree elbow that had more than the usual accumulation of green stuff on it, like a tiny #stalactite. Okay, water #leak found.

I was going to wait for the weekend to fix it, but it seemed to be speeding up, so I did it Wednesday. I had to cut a chunk of #convoluted pipe out of the system that was way more complex than it should have been. It had to go around other #pipes and join another #pipe and around some joists, but the #plumber who put this in 40 years ago had a #fetish or something. No word of a lie, it reminded me more of the Windows NT "pipes" #screensaver than anything else.

In a volume about the size of a 2L bottle of pop, there were 4 #elbows, 3 #unions, and five little pieces of pipe if I remember correctly. I soldered together a matching jumble of parts ... and then couldn't solder one side of it in, because it's at a local low point, and I couldn't get the last dribbles of #water to stop. Any water wicks the heat away and the #solder doesn't stick.

Ended up using a #flex line with #sharkbite connectors to replace the whole thing. What a shame, I was proud of my replacement.

  14. Happily it was a straightforward swap of identical models. Didn’t have to replace the sink flange as a result. It was an awkward business of hefting it up to get it aligned and locked into the flange, but it took only a mild amount of swearing to finally get it right.🤬

No leaks. Orders have been given to unfurl the mission accomplished banner.

(The wiring under this sink could use some taming. Whoever did it was certainly not paid by the hour. 🙄 )

  15. I noticed late last night, by way of discovering pooling water under the sink, that the garbage disposal had gone belly up.

And so today’s task is to replace it, which I don’t really relish doing, but:

"…so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." -Gandalf the Grey

And so, I’m off to the hardware store, having accepted the conditions are what they are and deciding how to act.

  16. This outlet was my most recent home maintenance surprise. It was behind a shelf unit and apparently not one of the ones we inspected after moving in.
Luckily, it was more ugly than unsafe; everything was still firmly attached.

  17. Today’s plan: buttress a sagging shelf in my daughter’s closet. Bought some new brackets & thought it’d be pretty straightforward.

However, the vertical foundational wood piece might be overlapping the edge of a stud, but is more edge proximate.

Then the wood rail that the shelf sat upon, is not mounted to the wall, but instead to the foundational piece, leaving a gap between it and the wall and, crucially, meaning that any bracket would not be level with the wall, sagging inward.

  18. All the quotes we've gotten from reputable #contractors to replace our roof have seemed unreasonably high, but then I look at my sister-in-laws house where whomever added the dormer put the siding over the shingles and didn't stop water from running straight into the plumbing stack (and then leaking down to the basement). I guess you pay either way.

  19. Okay, a plumbing thing on my agenda this morning.

I try to anticipate the possible outcomes when I face a repair/reno project. I can think of three possible paths of ascending difficulty, and half a dozen annoying complications possible along the way.

This it could be a 30min job or consume the whole weekend.

  20. Heck and dang. We spotted a leaking crack in the main drain pipe - thankfully upstream of the bathroom - while in the crawl space to winterize the house. It's 1-1/2" copper tubing and I wanted to avoid having to cut & sweat pipe so I got one of those pipe bandage kits. As I'm working the epoxy into the crack, I grip a portion of the pipe a few inches up and my fingers go through the bottom of it.

Looks like I'll be cutting & sweating pipe after all...

  22. Woot! 23 year old sliding patio door was getting super fussy, opens hard, door racks when pulled “wrong”. No amount of adjustment would make it happy.

$43.27 and 30 minutes later, thankful for common parts that just don’t change much, two new rollers and it’s literally openable with one finger.

  24. When you own a century home, the quantum of home repair is four hours. That is to say, any DIY home repair job, no matter how trivial it seems before you start, will take a minimum of four hours to complete.

This is based on the Century Home Uncertainty Principal (CHUP) which states that there is no way to know what disaster you will find whenever you open or screw into any surface.

  25. Big shout-out to Xyla Foxlin on #Youtube for demystifying fiberglass for me. I'm repairing rusted out holes in the bulkhead door to the basement, and it was way closer to the tool for the job than the lumpy expanding foam that was there before.

  26. So, I have managed to lock myself out of my own oven. It has been having trouble with temperature, occasionally overheating, so last night I decided to take out the temperature probe and test it to see if it is obviously the problem. It measured 1080 Ω, exactly what is expected at room temperature, so it is not likely the problem. While it was out, the oven fan came on, presumably because the open circuit made the oven think it was overheating. Unfortunately, in trying to shut off the fan, I managed to lock the oven door. Now it won't unlock, presumably because the temperature sensor is missing and its little electronic brain thinks it is too hot to open. So now it is just locked shut.

    Help?

  39. Anyone ever replace a power cord on a Shark vacuum? Ours has had a nasty bend, stable for years, that just became an actual sparking nightmare (no injuries!).

I like repairing things. If you've ever done this...

    A) How did it go?

    B) Were you able to find a non-Amazon place to buy the replacement cord? (Amazon is okay if we have to but it's always nice to seek out other options)

    C) Any particular set of instructions you followed?

  40. I'm looking at #homerepair & #enerysaving #grants for a #relative. There's something not right about the amount of #data you have to 'share' & the #privacy you have to give-away just to find out about #home #grant eligibility.
Clearly there are criteria but surely there could be a list or an annonymous Q&A people can use to establish potential #eligibility. Access to #personaldata should only be required if an actual application is made.
