Belkin will be bricking many of our sometimes-smart Wemo switches next year. We've had them for >10 years, so a good run for consumer electronics devices.
For several years, the fine folks at @atpfm have sung the praises of Caseta by Lutron. I've begun testing a small setup and I'm already sold. Yes, it's a little more expensive, but the way Caseta works is a significant improvement over our Wemo setup. Don't be put off by the range listed in the specs, this appears to be conservative by at least a factor of 2 in my testing.

@tswartz07 @petrillic I’d like learn more about the Lutron local-push. I have around a dozen #Lutron Caseta. They are the best, except for their need to “phone home “ about every three to five seconds. Literally, all the time. They, and other devices, send info to a big data vacuum at Amazon AWS which reportedly is used to train future smart home gadgets. I blocked the domains (using pi-hole) and the Lutron switches simply stop working. So I had to unblock the domains Other devices do the same, but they are somehow bypassing pi-hole using some ipv6 dns method I don’t understand yet. It’s a #privacy war. If I knew that before starting, I might have made different decisions. For one, Matter is (now) rock solid as long as you have a reasonably dense mesh. #HomeAutomation #HomeAssistant

@montef The lack of neutral wires in my 1940s home was the first big obstacle I faced in my #smarthome journey, which led me to purchase the Lutron Hub as the first accessory to my #homeassistant rig. The switches work perfectly, although I would have preferred that they run a #zigbee or #zwave protocol rather than their own proprietary one.
Zero complaints with #lutron performance though. -
Lutron Aurora dimmer switches for Philips Hue Smart Bulbs are marked down right now. Regularly $40 a piece, currently $27!
These work better than the Philips branded switches and they have the added bonus of covering the existing light switch to prevent them being turned off manually.

Do the new Countdown Timers for Lutron Caséta dimmers and switches require cloud functionality to operate? Or are they fully local? Can Home Assistant see anything about these timers, if they are set?

Spent many hours of my life trying to configure my home's #Lutron #RadioRA2 system. Finally learned two important things:
* Holding down the button on the back of the Connect Bridge will put it back in DHCP mode
* Telnet to the repeater, then you can use the #ETHERNET,0,IP_ADDR command to change the static IP if your network changes -
@badnetmask I got a pair of Zigbee extenders from IKEA that helped me with reach. Otherwise, I’ve been waiting for Matter / Thread to get settled before I buy anything else.
Things that work well: #Yale Assure SL locks, #Hue, #ecobee, #iSmartgate, #Hubitat, #Nanoleaf Essentials, #Lutron, #Ecolink, #Eve, #WYZE (vacuum), #Tablo
Not so well: #Aqara, #KeenHome, #Hunter smart fans, #Leviton Zigbee switches, #ADUROSMART

@badnetmask My experience with #ZWave was that it NEED a mesh to function. Installing 1 or 2 devices to try them out won't give consistent performance. I ended up going with #Zigbee instead, but beware of cheap China-sourced equipment - my failure rates with #Sonoff and #Aqara motion sensors was quite high. #Matter is supposed to fix a lot of the platform compatibility issues...as soon as it's ready.
For switches, my #Lutron #Caseta system (NOT Zigbee) has been 100% rock solid.

My #HomeKit automation to turn off a #Lutron light switch 5 minutes after a motion sensor stops detecting motion fails every time. I can use the Lutron and Home apps to turn it on/off so I know it's reachable. HomeKit's automation just refuses to work.
No problem—I'll just use #HomeAssistant. Well, I would, but I don't have a PhD in HA that I apparently need to add a 5-minute timer to a sensor. HA is incredibly powerful but struggles to do simple things in a user friendly manner.

Installed one of the new Lutron Diva Smart dimmers today, and I really like it. MUCH better than the older Caseta dimmers (which I still have several of). Highly recommended if you're in the Caseta ecosystem (or considering it). I will probably gradually swap out my older dimmers for the new style. I just wish they made a Pico remote that matched... #homeautomation #lutron #caseta #homekit

Finally, I have my entire first floor smartted up with Lutron Caseta switches and HomeAssistant!
Now I just gotta finish the last few rooms in the basement and second floor and all my lights will be ensmartened.

I feel really sorry for all y'all that got into #IoT/#HomeAutomation before #Thread became a real thing.
Definitely gonna try to do some sort of IoT hard-mode run where I just refuse to run anything not Thread-compatible. No hubs, baby!
(Though I'm told as far as hubs go, #Lutron #Caseta is worth violating that rule for its "just works" light switches. Something for later years, for me, anyways.)
