  1. Dating platforms both reflect and reinforce racial stereotypes and biases common in American culture.

When seeking a romantic partner, people gravitate toward others who are similar and familiar to them – not people whom they have been taught to see as fundamentally different from their family, friends and neighbors.

And part of that is the lasting legacy of laws designed to keep races segregated.

  2. In celebration of Loving Day, we're sharing "New Hope" by Corita Kent. This serigraph from 1966 is dedicated to Mildred and Richard Loving. At that time the Lovings were plaintiffs in the midst of the Supreme Court case that ultimately struck down states’ bans on interracial marriage the following year on June 12. 1/2

  8. Less than 60 years ago, interracial marriage was more than frowned upon by some; it was illegal in parts of the U.S. In 1958, Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple living in Virginia, were arrested for being married.

The Lovings won their landmark case, Loving v. Virginia, on June 12, 1967, abolishing all state laws against interracial marriage in the U.S. Now, every year on that date, the historic case is honored through Loving Day.

  10. Happy #LovingDay to all.

Hard to imagine that in my lifetime my marriage would not have been legal were it not for the courage and love of Mildred Delores Loving and Richard Perry Loving

  11. Today is #LovingDay!
When my parents were growing up, it would have been illegal for @Neem and me to be married, so today is the day when I appreciate the struggles others went through to get us to this spot. I feel incredibly grateful to be alive at this point in history, and nothing guarantees that these rights are static, so today I'll be thinking of ways to help ensure that my kids have the same freedoms that I have.

  12. Today is #LovingDay but what does this mean? Richard and Mildred Loving had committed what the U.S State of Virginia called unlawful cohabitation.

Their marriage was deemed illegal because Mildred was Black and Native American; and Richard was white. Their case went all the way to the Supreme Court. And on June 12th, 1967, the couple won.

  13. Loving Day should be a US national holiday.
Just about a month before I was born, interracial marriage became legal throughout the USA. My own marriage is interracial--this is part of what opened my eyes to the need for full marriage equality. I supported same-sex marriage for decades before it became legal throughout the US, giving and voting and writing to get people who would support it elected and to fund legal challenges.

  14. CW: Loving Day, #uspol

Happy Loving Day fediverse. A day we celebrate the Supreme Court ruling that made laws against inter-racial marriages unconstitution. A ruling that can easily be overturned by the current extremist court. Basic, fundamental rights like marrying who you want are still new and easy to get removed by extremists. A year after the right to an abortion was lost in the US, we must remain vigilant.

  15. It’s apparently Loving Day today, where the marriage is celebrated between an interracial couple which would lead to a US Supreme Court ruling that made all prohibitions against interracial marriage illegal (in that country). So, Happy Loving Day!
