  1. The Three Marys at the Empty Sepulchre -- Baciccio (Giovanni Battista Gaulli) -- oil on canvas -- c.1684 -- Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

Seeing posts about Easter prompted me to post this Baciccio, with which I fell in love when it was displayed for a while at London's National Gallery many years ago.

Growing up in England, the language, images, sounds, and architecture of Christianity are inescapable, even though England has become a largely post-Christian, secularized society.

As somebody who is not a Christian, I have mixed feelings about this. I was going to post a long thread about these mixed feelings, but it's getting late so that thread will have to wait.

  12. "Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror," Parmigianino, 1523-4.

Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, aka Parmigianino (1503-1540) was a pioneer of the Mannerist style, which was a gentle exaggeration and distortion of the more fussy proportions of Renaissance art. Here, we see him doing a self-portrait distorted by a convex mirror

Parmigianino was a monstrously talented artist whose career was disrupted by war and political upheavals, but who did achieve quite a bit of recognition in his own time. He was an inventive painter who also experimented with printmaking and etching, and reportedly was also an alchemist. He died young, only 37, of a fever.

Still, a fascinating portrait, and rather revolutionary for its time. He painted it when he was only 21, and gave it to Pope Clement VII. Apparently it was later passed on to the famous/infamous author, satirist, and early gay-rights pioneer Pietro Aretino. One wonders how Aretino, who was known to dabble in sexual blackmail, convinced the Vatican to give it to him....

    From the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

  13. "Urania, the Muse of Astronomy, Reveals to Thales the Secrets of the Skies," Antonio Canova, 1798-99.

Canova (1757-1822) was better known as a Neoclassical sculptor. And I'll admit...as a painter, he's a great sculptor. But despite whatever technical deficiencies this may have, I find it a sweet and charming scene. It may have been a study for a proposed sculpture that never got off the ground.

The son of a stonemason, Canova was a busy sculptor pretty much as soon as he was old enough to pick up a chisel. By 1800 he was Europe's most celebrated sculptor, patronized by Napoleon (who was sculpted, nude, as Mars), and created a statue of George Washington for the state government of North Carolina.

And Thales? Thales of Miletus (626/623 - 528/525 BCE) was one of Greece's Seven Sages, a philosopher who pioneered explaining the world through natural philosophy rather than mythology, and the use of mathematics, science, and deductive reasoning. This painting refers to his observations of the movements of the planets, which enabled him to be the first recorded person to predict an eclipse through scientific observation.

From the Museum Gipsoteca Antonio Canova, Possagno, Italy.

  15. Italian divisionists don’t get the attention that is lavished on French artists who used many of the same techniques, but I could stare at this stunning painting by Gaetano Previati (1852-1920) all day long. Dance of the Hours, 1899.
