Ganz schön schräg: Gestern wurde ein Artemisia-Gentileschi-Gemälde im Auktionshaus Dorotheum für 840.000 Euro verkauft. Das Gemälde, um das es geht, ist nicht einmal vollständig, sondern es wurde ein Loch an der Stelle ausgeschnitten, wo der Kopf der Maria Magdalena war. Das wurde scheinbar nicht als Schaden, sondern als Feature wahrgenommen.
Der Kunstmarkt ist schon ziemlich schräg... -

On Saturday we performed Renaissance theatrical art in Columbus. On Sunday we went to view Renaissance painted art in Columbus!
After our performance of "Arlecchino, Emperor on the Moon", one of our Players of the Patchwork suggested we attend a talk at the Columbus Museum of Art the following day on the restoration of "Hercules and Omphale" by the amazing 17th Century painter Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the few recognized woman masters of the art for the period.
The story of the painting is also fascinating, previously unknown to the world at large until being damaged in the 2020 Beirut explosion but being restore after years of dedicated effort by the Getty Museum.

The most famous woman painter of the 17th century, Artemisia Gentileschi worked in Rome, Florence, Venice, and Naples. Gentileschi painted this impressive full-scale depiction of Bathsheba at her bath circa 1637 at the height of her maturity. The painting exemplifies the genre for which Artemisia is best known today, history paintings featuring female protagonists.
