Die Flügel der Eichenholzschnitzereien aus dem 16. Jahrhundert sind von Hennen- und Rohrweihen inspiriert. Einst waren sie in der Gegend weit verbreitet – nun kehren sie zurück. Der Naturautor Robert Macfarlane betrachtet die Schnitzereien und stellt Verbindungen zwischen Engeln und Weihen her, was sie über unsere Gefühle für die Vögel und Engel aussagen.
Robert steigt zur Glockenstube hinauf, um sich die „Harrier Angels“ aus der Nähe anzusehen – zusammen mit Ruth Clay, der Pfarrerin von St. Wendreda’s, Edward Wilson-Lee, dem Autor von „The Grammar of Angels“, und Ajay Tegala, einem Ranger im Wicken Fen. Sie diskutieren über die Bedeutung der Engelschnitzereien im 16. Jahrhundert, als sie entstanden, und heute. Die Verfolgung und das Überleben der Engelschnitzereien spiegeln das Schicksal der Vögel wider.
