  1. Trying HaikuOS again

When was the last time I tried HaikuOS ? Maybe two or three years ago ?

I remembered using a USB stick as the destination of the installation. It can be easily installed on the same stick you’re booting HaikuOS from, without having to edit bootloader files or go into complicated boot issues, isn’t that amazing ?

So if you have for example a 64 GB USB stick, you can prepare it as the installation medium and then still use most of the space for HaikuOS. See here a howto :

    discuss.haiku-os.org/t/install

So, what’s different from last time I tried it ? Last time the Gnome Web (Epiphany) browser was making its way to become a feasible web browser for HaikuOS. It appears to be gone but LibreWolf is there, and Iceweasel and Iceweasel ESR. These work fine for browsing but drag and drop for customizing icons in the toolbar was not working for me, maybe a graphics card thing ? But there’s always NetPositive, the default HaikuOS web browser.

I think that HaikuOS is fun to play with, especially if you like its design. The bootup is pretty fast and it looks amazing. The desktop itself has a little learning curve but not too difficult.

Drawbacks ? It is still not multi-user as far as I know. You will be running as root all the time. And there’s lots of apps, sometimes outdated. It will not be ready to replace your office work computer but if you like to tinker and play around it could be a fresh alternative for what most open source users use.

  5. @job @tuxmain I think what Mozilla did to Debian packages is an exception to its trademark requirements

    bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrep

"More generally, Mozilla trusts the Debian packagers to use their best judgment to achieve the same quality as the official Firefox binaries."

If there are specific issues that needs adding a patch, Debian should be able to do that, and in worst case, resurrect #iceweasel name if mozilla complains again.

  7. @aburka @joeyh these ToS is not included in the source code, so don't apply to people building from source like #librewolf or #ironfox.

It applies to #Ubuntu, which ships official snap binaries, but not to #Debian which builds from source.

It'd at least be very confusing to people that only "some" Firefox is affected. Debian is a special case, as we got an exception from Mozilla for using that trademarked name (it was called #iceweasel for a long time before #mozilla gave this exception).

  9. So I guess I'm actually going to . I have installed now, but how does compare in everyone's opinion to things like and and all the other Firefox forks?

  11. 📑 #HaikuOS Report (Dec 2024):
    - #Iceweasel now available for x86_64
    - Virtual memory management optimizations
    - realtekwifi/virtio-pci driver updates
    - FAT/NTFS filesystem improvements
    - $30k in donations in 2024

  13. @n0toose #IceWeasel is a game-changer for #HaikuOS. Skipping over the already available LibreOffice, most productivity suites have cloud-hosted options available, so great browser support opens up a lot of possibilities to those with older hardware who may not want for go down the multi-user Linux route.

  14. An experimental port of Firefox Iceweasel is now available on HaikuDepot! So far, most sites are working fine. YouTube video playback is fine and Discord just works, however the web browser does occasionally take itself down. Still rather usable, though! If @ActionRetro thought that Haiku was ready for daily driving with Falkon (see first screenshot), then rebranded Firefox surely has to make it even more viable by those standards!

It should be noted though that just like with Falkon, some crash dialogs can be ignored (drag them to another workspace) and the web browser can still be used.

  16. Would it be too much to ask various forks: etc to join forces and chart an independent path, not just for catching up in tech, but actually developing it in the right direction?

    It's #IceWeasel all over!

  19. @eniko & to those elitist nerds who all laughed at #IceWeasel , I say ha. Ha, I say

  21. @petersuber I'll certainly give Mozilla, Inc. one cheer for reversing addons.mozilla.org's moratorium for Russian users on extensions able to circumvent Russian censorship.

But, you know who would get three out of three?

Anyone who starts keeping a persistent Firefox patchset permitting any user to control the browser's extension API keyring, and thereby to access extensions they (or someone they trust) signed, instead of only those Firefox extensions Mozilla, Inc. permits.

The real problem isn't monarchial errors; it's the monarchy.

My copy of ungoogled-chromium lets me load any extension I wish locally, without an online "store's" cryptographic signing permission. Why doesn't Firefox (outside of beta and developer releases, per stackoverflow.com/questions/31)?

From 2004 to 2016, Debian Project reacted to Mozilla's unacceptable "Distribution Partners" conditions (lwn.net/Articles/676799/) by maintaining a high quality unbranded browser version named Iceweasel -- until Mozilla, Inc. relented.

Mozilla, Inc.'s extensions monopoly, IMO, shows Iceweasel's proper time not only has come again but never ended. As Kipling (and Poul Anderson) said, "No truce with kings."

(Amended 2024-06-27 to suggest LibreWolf as a best-compromise path forward for Gecko/Quantum-based browsing, alongside Blink-based ungoogled-chromium.)

    #Mozilla
    #Firefox
    #extensions
    #UngoogledChromium
    #Iceweasel
    #LibreWolfBrowser

(Note: I'm aware of Parabola's Iceweasel-libre. It does not appear to address this issue.)

  23. Is it possible to have an add-on for Firefox-based browsers like #IceWeasel or #Librewolf, that removes potentially dangerous #javascript in the same manner that #TorBrowser does.

Apparently #jShelter immitates Brave, not Tor Browser.

This will help a person who has recently moved from Goo'#Chrome to a #Firefox-based browser.

  24. @foxhkron AFAIK #Firefish's name is infringin on some #Trademark|s and thus the Fork tries to avoid issues.

Kinda like #Iceweasel but with the difference that there is no communication between the two parties...
