Browser update: On Linux and macOS, I used Brave Origin Nightly for a while because it strips away junk like Leo AI, News, Rewards, Brave Ads, Speedreader, telemetry, Talk, Tor, VPN, Wallet, Web3 domains, Wayback Machine, and the Web Discovery Project, while keeping ad-blocking via Shields. It is great having things like Widevine (Netflix, etc.) built-in without any hassle.

However, Brave Origin Nightly still has a large memory footprint, and its speed is only just "good enough". I missed lightning-fast performance. For a while, I switched to Brave Origin Nightly only on Mac and strictly for DRM content or when apps like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams were not working properly. But now I am fully back, because I figured out a way.

The best things about Ungoogled Chromium:

- Open source
- No sync
- No profiles
- No forced Google integration
- No fingerprinting
- No pointless gradients, stats, or widgets cluttering the new tab page that cannot be disabled
- No useless toolbar icons
- No "calling home" features that slow down browsing
- No telemetry
- No fingerprinting
- No slowdowns caused by bloat
- You have the control
- Privacy-first

Cons:

- It takes a bit of tweaking to get services like Netflix working, but it is completely worth it for a tinkerer like me.
- No auto-updates (you have to subscribe to GitHub releases and install new builds manually).
- Anything can break at any time after updates

I have tried over 20 browsers, and this is still the one.

The Firefox UI and its lag behind modern CSS specs still don't convince me. What I hate most about Firefox-based browsers is that search and history don't work by simply typing a keyword and pressing Enter to go straight to the latest or most visited result. I want it to work as fast as a thought. Chromium's web standards and DevTools are absolute must-haves for me, and Firefox's UX still has too many issues.

Edit: It seems Netflix is still an issue on ungoogled-chromium from time to time, but I keep Brave Origin Nightly as a fallback.

Installing ungoogled-chromium-bin on Gentoo turned out to be very straightforward. Just as adding the Librewolf repo is btw. Recently I've been moving all browser installs over to these two. Both projects have been around for a long time and consistently deliver quality.

Since yesterday I want to give another try to #UngoogledChromium
I imported my #Firefox bookmarks into Ungoogled-Chromium and I use the excellent software @floccus to backup my bookmarks and tabs.
For the moment, it’s a good move. Everything runs smoothly.

I had one of the first #Reddit accounts (#33), up until last autumn, just before it turned 20, my account got shadow banned. I never got even the slightest answer or support from Reddit.

2 days ago I followed a link to Reddit on my #OpenBSD machine with ungoogled-chromium. Reddit showed me a "network security" message. I then got the message that I've been perma-banned for "breaking the rules".

My violation was repeatedly accessing Reddit with #ungoogledchromium from OpenBSD.

@RABid @nixCraft as of right now, #Waterfox, #Zen, #Icecat, #Floorp, and #LibreWolf are all #LLM nonsense free. LibreWolf and IceCat are more or less guaranteed to stay that way because of the nature of the projects. Waterfox has made general rumblings about being anti AI, but haven't made a definitive response to #Firefox turning evil(er?), but I expect them to remain LLM free.

Floorp, and Zen are harder to predict, since those projects seem to be more UX focused than anything else, but as of right now, they're LMM free AFAIK.

On the #Chromium derivative side of things, #Vivaldi seems strongly anti LLM, #UngoogledChromium can probably be counted on, and… that's kinda it. Maybe #Brave. I'm sure there are others, or will be, but it's hard to call and starting from a Google code base isn't promising.

If you're on Linux/BSD, you can try Gnome Web (Epiphany) or Falkon; they might suit your needs. Palemoon might also work for you.

If you're on Windows or Mac, you've got bigger LLM problems than your browser.

In all (rightful) excitement over Helium, we forget how good Ungoogled Chromium actually is.

## Advertisements and Screen Readers

Lots of the time, ads are just a garbled unlabeled mess, and they can lead to unfortunate accessibility issues.
For example, on iOS, some articles have silent ad embeds (like videos) that make VoiceOver count down endlessly. Because of things like that, I adblock everywhere.

I focused my uBlock Origin config on general screen reader issues such as ads, tracking, disabling YouTube Shorts, and making Twitch tabs use less CPU.

I use this all the time and don’t run into issues myself, so that’s why I’m sharing it.
If you want to support something later, I’ll include how to whitelist.

Highly recommended:
Use [NextDNS](https://nextdns.io/?from=773mk4ah) **and** uBlock Origin.
This way, you can use any browser you want with the configuration.
(Control D is an option, but it’s less accessible, so I’m not covering it here.)
This post assumes you already know how to use uBlock Origin.

## The Best Web Browser?

In my opinion as a power user, there is **no best web browser** and no best browser engine.
Here’s what I use or recommend:

* **Brave** (adblocking turned off)
* **Firefox**
* **Librewolf**
* **Ungoogled Chromium**

I’d stay away from other mainstream browsers, but if you must use them, use them.
I’m just sharing my best practices from experience, not gospel.

> **Note:**
> You may have to use uBlock Origin Lite if you use Chrome soon, once Manifest V3 rolls out.
> That’s why I avoid mainstream browsers entirely.

## My uBlock Origin Config

Right-click and save as to download the file.
Then in uBlock Origin, open the dashboard and restore from the file you downloaded.

If you’re using **uBlock Origin Lite**, open the extension settings and check the categories you want to block.
There are no importable settings for Lite.

## Whitelisting

You can whitelist in NextDNS by [going to this page](https://my.nextdns.io/525211/allowlist) and entering the domains or subdomains you want to allow.

For uBlock Origin, open the dashboard, go to the Trusted Sites button, and enter your domains or subdomains to whitelist.

At this point, you should have an ad-free experience across the web!

Weird bug on #DuckDuckGo... ever since they added the AI toolbar widget thingy... the images filters don't appear unless you click "All" and click back on "Images"...

We welcome other parts of the Firefox family (any browser with Gecko inside):
• The share of Librewolf mentions doubled since last year.
• The share of other Gecko-based forks mentions also doubled since last year. (Even though some Waterfox usage is not logged because i did not list it.)

The shares of Chrome and Vivaldi were stable for the first thousand answerers (maybe more IT inclined) but doubled with the later thousand (in the last 24 hours).

The share of the last line (Opera-Blink-Brave mentions) decreased since last year.

AFAIK it's difficult to use Chromium without #GooglePrivacyViolations: they're deeply built in. You could try #UngoogledChromium [1]. The main #Debian Chromium maintainers are considering the ungoogled-chromium list of about 100 patches [2][3]. There are at least two unclosed privacy-related patches for Debian Chromium [4][5].

I, of course, installed Vivaldi. But you can easily, point and click, install any web browser you wish in Open Mandriva Linux.

so uh, is it just me or does the #UngoogledChromium flatpak ask for a bunch of extra permissions again and again every update now?
this is what i got in the last update, and comparing the permissions of the UG flatpak and the Firefox flatpak, it's clear the former asks for quite a lot more.

Okay, those of you vowing to leave #Firefox, let's suppose you try #LibreWolf and find that it is unusable for sites you really need to be able to access because of their extreme anti-fingerprinting measures and their forcing of the time zone to GMT. What do you do then? Do you try a different Firefox fork, and if so, which one? Or do you move to a #Chromium based alternative, such as #UngoogledChromium?

Or, have you found an extension or workaround for LibreWolf that resolves these issues, and allows you to access all the sites you need to access without any hassle?
