I have a 2011 MacBook Pro running debian. It's keyboard is not working. I want to make it a home server for my media. I want to put all packages in Docker containers. I think I want to run yailscale and a reverse proxy of some sort.

Will I be safe?

Новомодное слово Homelabbing постепенно входит в нашу жизнь. По сути, это создание домашних серверов и запуск на них практически любого софта, который только может прийти в голову.
При этом вариантов применения просто огромное количество. Можно поставить готовые решения вроде Home Assistant, поднять какую-нибудь базу данных, собрать домашнюю медиатеку, запустить собственный сервис или очередное приложение, навайкоженное за выходные.
Начать эксперименты с Homelabbing меня подтолкнул старый ноутбук: за последний год в нём уже во второй раз умер аккумулятор, а увеличить объём оперативной памяти больше 8 ГБ было невозможно. В итоге я задумался о замене ноутбука, но старый оказался отличной платформой для знакомства с Homelabbing и Self-Hosted решениями.
В качестве операционной системы я выбрал Proxmox. На мой взгляд, это один из самых удобных вариантов для подобных проектов благодаря открытому исходному коду, большому набору инструментов для работы с виртуальными машинами и удобному веб-интерфейсу.
Первым делом на сервере появился Home Assistant, а также виртуальная машина с Linux для изучения популярного инструмента Hermes. О них расскажу подробнее в следующих постах.

The trendy new term Homelabbing is gradually becoming part of our everyday lives. Essentially, it means building servers at home and running pretty much any software you can think of on them.
There are countless ways to use a homelab. You can install ready-made solutions like Home Assistant, set up a database, build a home media library, run your own service, or deploy yet another app you vibe-coded over a weekend.
What got me interested in Homelabbing was an old laptop. Its battery had died for the second time in a year, and there was no way to upgrade its RAM beyond 8 GB. I started thinking about replacing the laptop, but the old machine turned out to be a great platform for getting familiar with Homelabbing and Self-Hosted solutions.
For the operating system, I chose Proxmox. In my opinion, it is one of the most convenient options for projects like this thanks to its open-source nature, extensive set of tools for working with virtual machines, and convenient web interface.
The first thing I installed on the server was Home Assistant, along with a Linux virtual machine for learning the popular Hermes tool. I’ll talk about both of them in more detail in upcoming posts.

After some time with me new proxmox based homeserver I'm quite happy and managed to reduce the idle power consumption even further to just below 20W which is for a full homeserver with a ZFS pool and spinning disks way less than I hoped for.

I want to set up a homeserver for some docker containers (immich, nextcloud, homeassistant, paperless, backup, some other stuff). Immich has the highest system requirements. The server should have 8GB RAM, better 16GB. And 1TB SSD, I own big HDDs to add as data storages. I have no idea regarding the CPU.

Everyone ist talking about the Lenovo TinyPCs as perfect cheep homelab machines. But what is "cheep" for my needs? 100€ or 500€? And where to get one? @homelab

Doppel-Nutzung Linux Desktop + Homeserver-Anwendungen

Ein paar Docker-Sachen habe ich auf meinem Linux Mint Mini-PC laufen (z. B. Collabora für meine Nextcloud auf dem Raspberry Pi).

In diesem überschaubaren Umfang wird die Desktop-Arbeit nicht gestört. Im Screenshot:

Docker = 1,7 GB Arbeitsspeicher, 1,5 % CPU.

Insgesamt sind von den 16 GB Arbeitsspeicher noch knapp 10 frei, kein SWAP notwendig.
