Oh, goody. #ICANN has announced it's opening up applications for new generic top-level domains.
All the ones added since they first started doing this - i.e. when the only generic TLDs were .com, .net, and .org - are, as far as I can see, garbage and useless.
Every single email I have ever received from a domain under .biz, .online, .shop, and all the other "new" GTLDs has been either spam, scam, or phishing.
I should just block all these TLDs completely, and any other new ones this results in.

Advies aan overheden: kies geen generiek topleveldomein
Het ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties adviseert medeoverheden geen aanvraag te doen voor een eigen gTLD (generiek topleveldomein). Dit vanuit de Nederlandse Digitaliseringsstrategie (NDS) en het streven naar een herkenbare digitale overheid vanuit de 1 overheidsgedachte. Het bekendste topleveldomein (TLD) in Nederland is ‘.nl’ – het laatste gedeelte in een internetdomeinnaam.
De internationale beheerder van topleveldomeinen, de Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), start in april 2026 met een aanvraagronde voor nieuwe gTLD’s. Op dit moment maken verschillende partijen reclame om overheden te verleiden een gTLD aan te kopen.
Waarom beter geen aanvraag gTLD?
De invoering van een gTLD zorgt niet alleen voor verdere versplintering van de online aanwezigheid van de overheid. Het brengt ook technische complexiteit en hoge structurele kosten met zich mee. Lees meer over de argumenten.
Wat is een generiek topleveldomein?
Een generiek topleveldomein (gTLD) is niet-landgebonden en in principe kan iedereen het gebruiken. Denk aan ‘.org’, ‘.net’, ‘.info’ en ‘.com’. Sinds 2012 staat de ICANN ook gTLD’s toe bedoeld voor organisaties die een band willen benadrukken met een specifieke stad, regio of opgave.
