6 Perennials That You Should Actually Grow as Houseplants This Winter

"There are a number of perennials that can work well as houseplants, suitable for a range of light and space conditions. Also, many tender perennials (those that are not cold-hardy in most climates) can be moved indoors for the winter to keep them thriving. Some tender perennials go dormant in winter, while others may continue to display active growth.

Moving potted plants indoors for winter, known as winterizing, works for both annual and perennial varieties. The growth habits of different plants can vary widely, and some may have longer periods of winter dormancy than others. This is why it's important to do a bit of research before acquiring plants to prepare for their indoor needs, which may differ from their outdoor habits.

Below, we're sharing a couple of perennials that can be grown as houseplants in pots."

  3. These new #geraniums were glad for a chance to come inside and warm and dry out, I think. Also. The white edge ones apparently are #deer candy.

  4. Happy #Saturday. 😊
The hardy #geraniums are now taking centre stage in the garden.

This is geranium pratense Mrs Kendall Clarke.

  5. The geraniums are greening up slowly after being under the lights for a week. I've turned the lights down some since the lettuce seemed to be suffering as it got taller. The grape cutting from last year that had a verbena I saved in it is growing fast! The saved Red Marconi isn't doing much but I haven't fertilized or pruned it either. Extra details in ALT about tent and LED lights.

Not a very good picture taken with my phone camera - but had to get it. This is a bumblebee asleep in a geranium flower!

  7. Enjoying the lovely weather and some of the flora on our back patio. I am particularly excited (proud?) of the #tomato and #basil plants, which were grown from seeds and clippings, respectively, from their indoor hydroponic progenitors.

    The #geraniums are just gorgeous.

  8. #geraniums in the woods. Also known as ”cranesbills”, but oddly, in Finnish they are called ”cranesknees”. Beats me why.

  9. Happy Thursday.

We have a few hardy #geraniums in the garden and I particularly like this one this year.

    It's called Mrs Kendall Clarke.

More stout than the wild version and better behaved.

  10. “Long experience has taught me that people who do not like geraniums have something morally unsound about them. Sooner or later you will find them out; you will discover that they drink, or steal books, or speak sharply to cats. Never trust a man or a woman who is not passionately devoted to geraniums.” — Beverley Nichols

    #OTD Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, #French #Author, #Writer, #Actress, #Cat Lover, & #Poet, is born.

Known simply as Colette, she is best known for Gigi (1944) & Cheri (1920).

    In "Sido," Colette wrote,

    "O #Geraniums, and yours, O #Foxgloves,
    Springing up amidst the #Coppice,
That gave my childish cheeks their #Rosy warmth."

    She also wrote,

"There are no #Ordinary #Cats," & "Time spent with a cat is never wasted."

  12. Peppers and Hyssop 34 days.

    Geranium resurrection 10 days.

    Forsythia cuttings 2 days.

There might be new life showing at the base of one geranium. First time wintering them bare-root, might just replant into these gallon pots this fall if they've survived.

  13. Dads garden has these lovely #geraniums flourishing in the summer heat… Both pink and red.

Brings back childhood memories, easy to grow but need cutting back after the flowering period so that they come back even more plentiful next year!

    #glorious! 🙏💖
