Alaska precipitation totals in August showed a very sharp west-to-east difference relative to the 1991-2020 baseline normal. Western Interior excessively rainy with some places having three times normal. Meanwhile, Cook Inlet area, after a (near) record wet July had way below normal totals. Southeast also drier than normal. @Climatologist49 @DeniseGutzmer

Thunderstorm season is nearly over for another year across mainland Alaska. This season started off slow but ramped up just before summer solstice. Many wildfires started during this time but most were unable to become even moderately large fires. The mini-peak in mid-August was unusual but not unprecedented. Total strike count was lower than last year but typical since the current lightning detection network came online in 2012. @Climatologist49 @anisian

A Christian attitude in these precarious times
Today, on ‘From Guestwriters’, we published a reader’s question about the Christian stance in these chaotic times.
In any case, recent months have certainly brought us plenty of issues that could cause concern. In Ukraine, Russia’s inhumane conflict with its southern neighbour continues unabated, whilst the Russian government spares neither person nor property. So we see ‘Gog’ advancing southwards, whilst the rest of the world hears about it, watches, but does very little to prevent this advance.
It was not only Europe that had to contend with a great many natural disasters this summer. There was the severe drought, but this was offset by violent hailstorms and torrential downpours. Many countries were ravaged by storms, landslides and mudslides. Climate change meant we had to experience its dangerous consequences first-hand. Melting glaciers made their power felt and seen with great force.
Those who read the Bible regularly are certainly not surprised by any of these events. The Bible warns us that difficult times are to come, with an increase in natural disasters and more violence amongst people. These days, even minors do not shy away from stabbing others or shooting them dead.
In the face of all these events, we must ask ourselves how we should observe all this and whether or not we should respond. We are convinced that we cannot stand by and watch silently from the sidelines. As followers of Christ, we must live by his teachings and, out of love for our fellow human beings, we are called upon to take active action.
As Christians, we cannot simply stand by and watch all these events unfold. We must not only make our voices heard, but also roll up our sleeves and get stuck in.
As children of God, we can trust that Jehovah is willing to give us gifts to help others. We must therefore make practical use of the gifts we receive from God. It is not only within our own church community that we should allow these spiritual gifts to flourish. We must open ourselves up to God’s gifts in such a way that we may grow in wisdom and spiritual strength. We must understand why God has given us these gifts. It is not so that we should do nothing with them. In the same way, we must have the courage to reach out and speak to people about our faith and our hopes for the future.
The basis for putting these gifts into practice lies in understanding their purpose. They are a manifestation of the qualities with which God is prepared to endow people. They enable us, as believers, to overcome our own uncertainty and fear and to maintain a biblical perspective on the future. In this way, we are offered opportunities to serve God and to help further build up the body of Christ and bring it to maturity.
We must share the gifts we receive through God’s Spirit with others, both within the church community and beyond, with love.
In all expressions of spiritual gifts, priority must be given to love. The apostle Paul explains that even extraordinary gifts — speaking in tongues, prophecy, knowledge and faith — mean nothing without love. We must be aware that spiritual power, separated from love, becomes spiritual arrogance.

The question posed: How should Christians use their spiritual gifts today?

I was just taking a look back, a similar scene separated by just over two months this summer, a before and after
On the left taken 12th June, on the right taken 21st August
Horrifying #summer2026, but we here have been so lucky to escape wildfires
So relieved for everyone, but particularly the wildlife, that the drought has broken

Wildfires in Alaska this summer burned about 89,000 acres (36,000 ha), about 14 percent of the median in the previous 30 years. This is also lowest area burned since 1995. Nonetheless, the 7300 acre Mukluk Fire at Tok is one of the worst fires on record in Alaska in terms of homes lost. Data courtesy Alaska Interagency Coordination Center. @Climatologist49 @anisian

Bei Hitze hilft nur eins: Viel liegen und wenig bewegen. Gucken erlaubt - schlafen ist besser 😊
