#UK Mega-donors overseas are already trying to get around the £100,000 cap
If we are serious about protecting our #democracy, the rules cannot be this easy to sidestep.

#Georgian elections accompanied by vote buying, #intimidation, European monitors say
During observation, we noted cases of #vote buying & double voting before & during elections, especially in rural areas
The presence of cameras of the ruling party in the #polling stations, and people in front of polling stations tracking and possibly controlling #voters, led to the atmosphere of pressure and party-organized intimidation.

New political funding rules sneak in
The Tory govt passed a statutory instrument that increases amount of money an individual can donate to a party without declaring who donated it, from £7,500 to £11,180
The same statutory law increased election spending cap by 80%, from £19.5m to £35m - the amount party HQs can spend.

@Philsturgeon An interesting note is that presentation of ID is NOT required for postal voting.
I happened to come across this as I regularly vote by post and wondered how the new #voter suppression (voter ID) law would function.

The last time a political party was elected to government by a majority of the UK electorate was in 1935......and the only other European country to have a first-past-the-post voting system is...Belarus!!

He said there was an “imbalance” between accepted ID for older people and the lack of options for younger folk.

House of Lords is not the problem. It's the entire democratic makeup of UK system.First Past The Post has given UK minority voted Governments since 1931. The majority view has NOT been represented in all that time. Current UKG is 43% of vote with 80 seat majority & carte blanche winner takes all. It's unsustainable.
UK needs #FairVotes #ProportionalRepresentation first before talking about other reform!

Possession of photo ID is uneven in the UK, with those short on time and money less likely to have the required paperwork. This law will make it harder for those already having a tough time to have their say.
The government trialled this policy ID during the 2018 and 2019 English local elections in a handful of affluent local authorities. Even with public information campaigns, over 1,000 voters were refused a ballot for not having the right paperwork. The government now want to roll out this scheme to everyone for the 2023 local elections.
There is a reason groups as wide ranging as the Salvation Army to Stonewall, Age UK and racial equality organisations oppose these plans: they will impact some people more than others and pull up the drawbridge to people across the country.
