  1. Apparently a "British" billionaire has donated £9m to the #FrogFacedFacist's Reform UK party. To quote the Independent online newspaper…

"Despite living in Thailand for more than 20 years, and holding a Thai passport and sometimes going by his Thai name, Harborne has made a considerable amount of donations into British politics."

This man is basically a foreign national trying to influence British politics from afar. There should be a cap on political donations, and an outright ban on donations from abroad and/or from non-domiciled ex-pats.

  2. Two Lords have been suspended from the House of Lords for breaking lobbying rules. Lobbying on behalf of commercial interests, which I think is a euphemism for something probably illegal and not dissimilar to what the bloke who's just got 10.5 years in prison did.

Why can't we just "de-Lord" them? We undeniably have an archaic and corrupt democracy.

  3. Celebrating International #democracyday , by calling for a fair system where every vote counts to replace the democracy-lite #FPTP system which delivers results with little connection to what voters want. Lets change to Proportional Representation where all votes matter. #prnow #democracy

  4. #Britain's #democracy is in crisis

Our First Past the Post #voting system increasingly delivers results that have little to do with what the country wants.

This #DemocracyDay, I'm calling for a fair system where every vote counts.

It's time for Proportional Representation. #PRnow

5 parties polling strongly, chaotic results, millions left unrepresented.

If you’re serious about having a REAL mandate—not just to lead, but to lead differently and more effectively—that means cross-party cooperation and finally delivering on the promise your predecessor broke: ditch first-past-the-post. Electoral reform can’t wait another decade.

  8. From @thetyee today:
“If so, we’d also be moving towards an even more polarized future, politically and regionally. (Yes, some form of proportional representation is the answer. No, it’s not going to happen.)"

    This defeatism pisses me off.

So we're just supposed to resign ourselves to descent into fascism if we continue to allow our democracy to be increasingly polarized and moderating voices shut out.

  9. The antiquated, undemocratic, insanity of the Canadian electoral system was really what took centre stage last night as Canadians all over the country tried to figure out how to twist and squeeze the First Past the Post system into a result that would stop our own mini-Trump.

We managed to do it successfully in enough places, but it had the opposite effect in others, allowing #CPC candidates to come up the middle, and all at the expense of our multi-party democracy.

There are plenty of ridings to pick from for examples, but the simplest example of what is wrong is always the national vote compared to seats.

    Bloc: 6.4% national vote = 6.7% (23) seats.
    NDP: 6.3% national vote = 2.0% (7) seats.

Until the two ‘ruling' parties fix this, Canada will never be a truly functional modern democracy.

Now, in a minority situation where doing what is best for the country as a whole should be top of everyone's agenda, could be a good time to push.

It would also save our Elections Canada workers from having to deal with another 6ft long ballot in some as yet undetermined riding. ;=)

  10. It’s absurd that a handful of swing ridings in one region (the 905) might once again decide the entire election outcome for a country as vast and diverse as Canada.

This is the rot of first past the post in action.

Proportional representation would ensure every region—and every voter—matters equally.

  12. @wood5y

I've just looked up some figures, they shed a new light on Starmer's 'Landslide Victory'.

    2017
    Corbyn 12,877,918 40%

    2019
    Corbyn 10,269,051 32%

    2024
    Starmer 9,634,399 34%

So he got even LESS votes than JC in spite of 1/2 Labour party campaigning against him, and just barely 2% more of the votes cast. No wonder he feels insecure!

  19. #ukge24: The low vote for Labour compared with number of seats is not a bug but a feature of First Past The Post systems. You only need to win each seat by one vote, so if you are directing resources you transfer to areas where extra effort might push them over the line. #PRNow

  21. I wonder if I'll ever live in a democracy during my lifetime? If I'm lucky, I might have 20 years to go, give or take. Sadly, I'm not hopeful.
    #PRNow

  22. Just remember this, you're going to hate Keir Starmer and the Labour Party in 2038 when they're struggling towards the end of their 4th term. You can thank our first past the post electoral system for that.

  23. The only realistic way that the incumbent Tory MP for West Worcestershire, Dame Harriet Baldwin, can be unseated is by an election pact among the progressive opposition. In 2005 the Liberal Democrats came within a couple of thousand votes of the then MP, Sir Michael Spicer (who incidentally claimed expenses for repairing his helipad and installing a chandelier). At the last election Baldwin captured 61% of the votes cast, and it's a very safe seat.

I'm appealing to the West Worcestershire Liberal Democrats and Labour (and the thriving Green party) to please do the sensible thing, swallow your pride, and unite behind a single progressive candidate. Even though your leaders are too stubborn or self-assured to cooperate at a national level, please show some common sense and real leadership at a local level.

    #GeneralElection2024 #UKPol #UKPolitics #WestWorcestershire #PRNow

Edit: I should add that the various tactical voting websites are of no help here, because Labour and the LibDems are too close to call. However, if their votes were combined (along with the Greens) it should be possible to unseat a prominent backbencher. Without clear guidance as to who to vote for, or a situation where there is only one progressive opposition candidate, it'll almost certainly remain a Tory seat. The priority should be to get rid of the Tory and to get rid of #FPTP.

  24. @fkamiah17 I'll believe it if/when it happens. It seems extraordinarily unlikely. It would be great if it did though.

  25. Doomscrollin'.

Can't get enthusiastic about Labour doing well in local elections. They've been institutionally captured by transphobes, and have also swung as far to the right as they can in an effort to be more Tory than the Tories. Didn't vote yesterday as not registered because staying under shitty family's radar, but can't honestly see the point given the choices here in 2024. We need #PRNow.

  26. @TJ1001 So do you think His Majesty's Loyal Opposition would behave differently were they in power? #prnow
