This extraordinary gum tree is flowering at the moment. Such contrasting colours of flower and newly forming gum nut. The mature gum nur is a huge woody thing about the size and shape of a pattypan squash.
Not sure what species of #eucalypt it is -

Today I went for a beautiful walk in a Tasmanian forest with my wife. There were fabulous groves of Swamp Paperbarks interspersed with Silver Wattle, Blackwood, Cherry Ballart, Peppermint Gums and many smaller trees like Hazel Pomaderris.
I couldn't decide on my favourite bark of the day. Swamp Paperbark or Peppermint Gum.

What is it about eucalypts that makes them survivors? It's a combination. Leathery leaves. Fire-resistant bark. Dormant buds under bark, waiting for fire. Mallee roots (lignotubers) at ground level to let them regrow. Roots which put out special chemicals to unlock scarce nutrients. And gumnuts which use fire to germinate and get a head-start on any rivals.
