  2. Fact vs. Fiction: Epicurus 🏛️

Fiction: A hedonist obsessed with luxury and indulgence.
Fact: A minimalist who lived in a garden, valuing friendship over fame.

He taught that happiness isn't about abundance—it’s the absence of pain and fear. Simplify your needs, find your tribe, and be at peace. 🌿

  4. Live fully. Live now. Don't wait. Be careful of overpreparing. It's easy to make excuses, wasting time waiting for something to fall into place.

"The fool, with all his other faults, has this also, he is always getting ready to live…. How late it is to begin really to live just when life must end!"

Seneca, On the Shortness of Life (quoting Epicurus)

  7. #Epicurus, the precursor to #Lucretius in the #materialist #philosophical tradition, believed that we need knowledge only because without it we are unhappy. I find it wonderful that following one's curiosity to bring oneself #joy is fundamental to the roots of the Western philosophical tradition that led to #science.

  10. Some of the Stoics thought that Epicurus and his philosophy were entirely antithetical to Stoicism. Though he thought they got many things wrong, that wasn't Seneca's view. Here's a Sadler's Lectures episode about that

  13. Arthur Brooks completely misunderstands Epicurus here. Yes, his observations in this video are correct, but Epicurus did not believe that all suffering should be avoided at all costs:

“Furthermore, we regard certain states of pain as preferable to pleasures, particularly when greater satisfaction results from our having submitted to discomforts for a long period of time. Thus every pleasure is a good by reason of its having a nature akin to our own, but not every pleasure is desirable. In like manner every state of pain is an evil, but not all pains are uniformly to be rejected. At any rate, it is our duty to judge all such cases by measuring pleasures against pains, with a view to their respective assets and liabilities, inasmuch as we do experience the good as being bad at times and, contrariwise, the bad as being good.” (Epicurus, Letter to Menoeceus)

The acquisition of riches has been for many men, not an end, but a change, of troubles.

  15. Never be poor

If you shape your life according to nature, you will never be poor. If you shape your lie according to people’s opinions, you will never be rich.
