  1. If your brain is always multitasking, or responding to technoprompts, there is no time or energy for undirected mental play. Furthermore, if you are consumed by the same information loop circulating around everyone else, you don't have anything to stimulate you into thinking differently. ... You don't have access to unexpected knowledge. You're just swept along in the same narrow current as everyone else, which is swift but not deep.

  2. Forget about the moral imperative of creating a more stable, just world. The world is becoming increasingly connected and intertwined. Allowing injustice and human despair to fester will ultimately bring a pay back, even to those who might think they are most immune from it.

  3. Interior Department starts emergency drought measures to prop up Lake Powell

Widespread drought and fears of a power crisis are forcing the US Bureau of Reclamation to start sending billions of gallons of water from Flaming Gorge Reservoir downstream to prop up Lake Powell.

The releases began Thursday. The water will travel down the Green River until it joins the Colorado near Canyonlands in Utah and makes its way to Lake Powell.

  5. Darwin's expression, "the struggle for existence," is sometimes erroneously interpreted as the struggle between different species. In reality, the struggle Darwin was thinking of and which drives evolution forward is the competition between near relations. What causes a species to disappear or become transformed into a different species is the profitable "invention" that falls by chance to one or a few of its members in the everlasting gamble of hereditary change. The descendants of these lucky ones gradually outstrip all others until the particular species consists only of individuals who possess the new "invention."
