  1. Ultradireita: as raízes da sedução

Novo livro analisa as ambivalências no coração do autoritarismo.

  2. What the Lemmings Could Not Do: On Suicide, Cognition, and the Mortal Imagination

Of all the acts a human being can perform, suicide is the strangest. It requires the actor to picture a world without itself, judge that world preferable, and execute a plan whose author will not survive to see the result. No other behavior in the human repertoire so cleanly inverts the survival logic that built every body and every brain. The question of whether other animals do the same thing is a question about cognition. The behavior is downstream of cognition, and beneath cognition runs the question of meaning. To kill oneself one must first have the kind of self that can be killed by its owner. […]

  13. How do we make sense of #Durkheim's fatalistic #suicide? It is a single paragraph in a footnote at the end of the empirical chapters. It lacks overwhelming evidence; it uses anecdotes; it denies its contemporary relevance; & his chapter on anomic suicide touches on over-regulation at times. In this paper, we tackle this issue head on! Theorizing how regulation can be causally related to suicide. Check it out! #sociology #theory

  15. Happy friday, y'all! Is Hindu Sati a good ex. of #altrusitic #suicide? #Durkheim sure thought so. I think its a better ex. of the need for cultural, social psychological, and emotional forces included in any theory of suicide! Throwing it back to 2017. Don't be fooled by David Emile Durkheim.

  17. ...and he said that Simmel was an author he'd only recently come to & found difficult to decipher. Do other folk in sociology or social & human sciences more generally feel the same way? I feel like we all have exposure to high levels of #Durkheim, #Weber & Marx as part of our basic training, but not Simmel. Is he just too dense for all but enthusiasts to bother with? Or is the brilliance of the thought not enough to justify wading through the morass of sentences? /4 END

  18. Following the macro-level typology, the paper posits a typology at the level of #emotion. On the integration dimension, sadness-happiness are the affectual motivators for egoisim-altruism. For the regulation dimension, shame, in different forms. characterizes these suicides. From there, the paper can expand the basic four-fold model to really explain what #Durkheim intended with his mixed-forms (see the last chapter of Book II, The Individual Forms).

This paper was a joy to think through.

  21. The competing frame of late 19th century #sociology contending with #psychoanalysis created an environment in which fields were tripping over themselves to generate knowledge. In my admittedly biased frame, while #Durkheim was asking powerful questions about the meaning + function of phenomena like violence, #Freud was attempting to reduce it to a drive, only subordinate to sex. Once the machinations of power saw how Hobbesian late Freud was, it was clear who was the enemy and it wasn't Freud.

  25. In making our worst tendencies our default ones: "The turn-of-the-20th-century scholar Émile #Durkheim called this state #anomie, or a lack of social norms that leads to #lawlessness. “We are moral beings to the extent that we are social beings,” Durkheim wrote. In the past two years, we have stopped being social, and in many cases we have stopped being #moral, too." theatlantic.com/politics/archi
