• Titus Lucretius Carus: "Nature is not unique to the visible world; we must have faith that in other regions of space there exist other earths, inhabited by other peoples and other animals."• Giordano Bruno: "Innumerable suns exist; innumerable earths revolve about these suns in a manner similar to the way the seven planets revolve around our sun. Living beings inhabit these worlds."

#Epicurus, the precursor to #Lucretius in the #materialist #philosophical tradition, believed that we need knowledge only because without it we are unhappy. I find it wonderful that following one's curiosity to bring oneself #joy is fundamental to the roots of the Western philosophical tradition that led to #science.

"In practice the text of #Lucretius rests upon two Leiden manuscripts [...] The older and better is O (Voss. Lat. F. 30)Offsite Link. It was written not long after 800 in the Palace School of Charlemagne. A contemporary corrector, using a distinctive insular hand, emended the text and in places filled up lacunae left by the orignal scribe. This hand has been recognized as that of Dungal" https://www.historyofinformation.com/detail.php?id=3217

"Thus time and again the Earth has deserved and holds
the name of Mother, for she herself created the human genus
and at definite times poured into existence every animal
that runs wild near and far on the high mountains
together with the birds of the air in endless forms."#Lucretius anticipating #Darwin on #evolution
A chapter of my translation and comment of De Rerum Natura:

In January 1417 Poggio Bracciolini discovered #DeRerumNatura (written by #Lucretius in the 1st century BC outlining #Epicureanism) in a German monastic library.
That copy was copied from an earlier 9th century text corrected by an Irish monk, #Dúngal.
Dúngal also wrote a book explaining to #Charlemagne how two solar eclipses could occur in the same year, and, incidentally, the structure of the #cosmos as he understood it.

Mother of us all, pleasure of humans and gods,
nourishing Venus, who, under the gliding stars,
vitalize the open sea and the fruitful lands,
because of you every living species
is conceived and born into the light of the sun:
at your approach the winds flee you and the clouds
scatter away, to you the prolific earth
offers lovely flowers, to you the surface of the sea smiles
and the serene sky shines with suffused light.

Still, it's good to know that #Bacon praised #Democritus for denying #teleology; if both #Democritus and #Lucretius deny it, then it seems like #Epicurus probably did too? @philosophy

The appendix to Part I of #Spinoza's Ethics constitutes one of the most concerted arguments against #teleology in nature that I've found before #Darwin.
The other major one I have looked at is dependent origination in #buddhism which I have written about here https://bit.ly/3glD7bD
Do you know any others in #philosophy or elsewhere?
I'm aware I need to look more into #Hume #Bacon #Lucretius and #Pyrrho and I'm currently deep in #Nietzsche

I really want to talk to someone about #Spinoza's anti-teleological view, which #Schopenhauer tries to blame on a wish to avoid "speculative theology."
I think it's the opposite; Spinoza's theological view comes as a result of his seeing through the anthropomorphic illusion of teleology in nature. In this way, his insight is similar to the #Buddha #Nietzsche #Darwin and #Taoism.
Possibly also #Epicurus #Democritus et al; I have yet to read enough #Lucretius to say for sure.

I'm re-advertising on Mastodon my translation and comment of passages of Lucretius' "De Rerum Natura", starting with the "Swerve":
