I finished reading Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver the other day. It's an utterly brilliant retelling and resetting of Dickens’s David Copperfield, this time set in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia at the turn of the 21st century. Just as Dickens did with the 'dark satanic mills' of Victorian England, Kingsolver manages to give all the characters a real life while skewering the evils of American capitalism, especially the mining and pharmaceutical companies, and how they have destroyed the lives of so many. They stripped the land and people's livelihoods, and then foisted OxyContin on them, wrecking their lives and their communities. It's the type of novel that stays with you for a long time afterwards. Highly recommended.

At the store and came across a pretty discounted hardcover copy of "Demon Copperhead" by Barbara Kingsolver. It is worth purchasing a physical copy? I usually try to stick to library books and purchase books I really like, but the library wait list is long and the price is tempting.

About to travel and was looking for something good to read.

@bookstodon Does anyone else read aloud with their partner? My husband and I just started #DemonCopperhead by #BarbaraKingsolver who’s originally from rural Kentucky. I’ve been fortunate enough to live all over the world but I went to much of primary school in Louisville…and OMG does my accent come back when I read this book aloud. My husband is looking at me like I’m a completely different person! 😂

@LookNoFurther Read Barbara Kinsolver’s book #demoncopperhead for her description of foster children forced to harvest tobacco. Excruciating exhausting work which she describes vividly, in great detail, and it made me sick to read. Horrifying to think of children doing that kind of work.

I enjoyed that one a lot because it took place near where my mom was raised and I visited some of the places in the book in 2019. However, Kingsolver's most recent book, #DemonCopperhead was a much stronger story.

Do you ever read a book and go "NOOOO" when a character makes a heartbreakingly terrible decision that you wish they wouldn't? This has happened exactly twice in my 30+ years of voracious reading. Once with Vanity Fair (DOBBIN DON'T MARRY AMELIA YOU'RE TOO GOOD FOR HER!) and again last night with #BarbaraKingsolver's #DemonCopperhead (no spoiler, but NOOOOO DEMON DON'T!)

I never read David Copperfield in school, but dang this book, this is good.
