"I see you. I see all those who men call monsters.
And I see the men who call them that. Call themselves heroes, of course.
I only see them for an instant. Then they're gone.
But it's enough. Enough to know that the hero isn't the one who's kind or brave or loyal. Sometimes - not always, but sometimes - he is monstrous."

    - from Stone Blind: Medusa's Story by #NatalieHaynes (2022)

  14. Book recs:

Just read WALKING ON COWRIE SHELLS by #NanaNkweti (an amazing short story collection) and STONE BLIND by #NatalieHaynes (a retelling of the Medusa myth) this weekend. Highly, highly recommend both. Both with compelling prose (Nkweti's ability to write distinctive narrators for each story and Haynes' fresh look at Greek mythology, especially with Athena).

This is the #TrojanWar as told from the perspectives of the women.

Haynes mines #Homer, #Virgil, #Ovid, #Euripides, and #Aeschylus for the women who circle the edges of the story, plotting, prophesying, waiting, grieving. Most memorable among them are the inconsolable, far-seeing #Cassandra, the acerbic #Penelope, and #Calliope, the muse who insists that this war be told her way.

  24. This is not a #podcast one should listen to in public. While shopping downtown today, I kept laughing out loud at this irreverent account of #Homer's #Odyssey.

Happily there's an entire podcast series of #NatalieHaynes Stands up for the Classics. I shall be downloading more!
