  1. #Bookstodon help needed.

I have a distinct memory of a book by #GuyGavrielKay, which features horse racing in the middle of a town. With rivalries between the neighbourhoods, bribery, etc.

    Modeled on the #PalioDiSiena.

What book is it? I can't find it.

  3. I am reading and loving @adapalmer #InventingTheRenaissance and it is - within my mind - in (mostly gentle) discourse with #JoWalton’s #Lent and #GuyGavrielKay’s #ABrightnessLongAgo, both of which I read years ago, and which I now want to re-read. #bookstodon

  4. Of course I can read any of the #books I have already open. Or ready to be #read.

Or I could just reread #Tigana. Again. Just one more time.

    Just. One. More. Time.

The first genre fiction I ever bought from my own money, back in 1992(?).

60 pages in, I'm really enjoying Written on the Dark, Guy Gavriel Kay's new book.
GGK never disappoints, he is always a treat and joy to read.

  6. @bookstodon Oh. Oh yes. I got a mail from a book store today that the new book by Guy Gavriel Kay, Written on the Dark was available to order. It didn't take me long.

Haha, I most likely read it at some point since it was published in 1990 and I know that books by #GuyGavrielKay tend to be quite dense. Still, I've queued it up in my TBR audiobooks. Going on a #RoadTrip, as I am next week, is a great time to get into very long and complex #audiobooks. I read his most recent books (less dense) on my last 2 trips.

  8. This whole #RomanEmpire trend-thing is slightly depressing, since my favourite #nhl #hockey team is the #OttawaSenators, my favourite book is #GuyGavrielKay's brilliant #SarantineMosaic (set in a version of Justinian's Byzantium), and #MikeDuncan's #HistoryOfRome podcast is one of the several that I cycle between as calming-bedtime-noise (living in the city, I find that putting on a soothing voice speaking in a measured tone helps to drown out other noises much better than a fan or other white-noise does). Stop co-opting all the stuff I like, problematic hetero dudes! 😾

  9. #CurrentlyReading: #ChildrenOfEarthAndSky by #GuyGavrielKay. This is one of my favourite authors in all the world, and the good thing about being a little behind on his catalogue is that I don’t have to wait a couple of years in between books 😊

  10. @bookstodon
I actually finished a 500-page dead tree book!! Virtually all of my reading is audio but I keep a print book at my table to read while I eat, usually about 200 pages or so. However, I bought a signed copy of #AllTheSeasOfTheWorld by #GuyGavrielKay from #McNallyRobinson last spring so I reread the 2 previous loosely-linked books on high-speed audio and then got started. It was a very satisfying read. Recommended for fans of #HistoricalFiction and #Fantasy.

  11. @owlislost @RHW @bookstodon
#GuyGavrielKay has been doing a fantasy/historical fiction crossover for a very long time and I believe that his books sell very well. He's Canadian, which may be why you haven't heard of him.

  12. Rereading #TheSummerTree by #GuyGavrielKay. It must be more than 30 years since I first read it.

  13. @owlislost Oh, #MissingHearts is very well done and Flights is on my TBR list. I really enjoyed both the other Tokarczuk books I read. Just finished Hester and #AmReading #GuyGavrielKay All the Seas of the World (print), as well as Night of the Living Rez (audio). Trying to hit 70 books for 2022. May be one short!

  14. @simkern
Started that in between books but then another read took over. Will return to it at some point! Currently midway through 3 fat books by #GuyGavrielKay. Alternating between print and audio.

  15. @bethroots @RomComLove
I enjoyed that one a lot because it took place near where my mom was raised and I visited some of the places in the book in 2019. However, Kingsolver's most recent book, #DemonCopperhead was a much stronger story.
    #AmReading #ChildrenOfEarthAndSky by #GuyGavrielKay
I have 3 of his fat books, and this is #2 for this week of reading. I could stand fewer characters/storylines but I think I'm following, so far.

  16. @EllenInEdmonton @justinling WONDERFUL! Have you also read Children of Earth and Sky, and A Brightness Ling Ago? Not required reading but they link together very satisfyingly. #GuyGavrielKay

  17. @caroreads @bookstodon My number 2 read this year was #GuyGavrielKay’s All the Seas of the World. It is a wonderful book and brought me much joy to read.
