Er komt mogelijk een einde aan het decennialange verbod op het boek “De Duivelsverzen” van Salman Rushdie in zijn geboorteland India, meer dan twee jaar nadat de auteur bijna dodelijk werd neergestoken. Deze week beëindigde een rechtbank in New Delhi de behandeling van een vijf jaar oud verzoekschrift tegen het besluit van de regering uit 1988 om de import te verbieden van een roman die kort na publicatie wereldwijde verontwaardiging onder moslims veroorzaakte vanwege vermeende godslastering.

De indiener van het verzoekschrift, Sandipan Khan, had aangevoerd dat hij het boek niet kon kopen vanwege een kennisgeving van de Centrale Raad van Indirecte Belastingen en Douane van 5 oktober 1988, die de invoer ervan in India verbood.

Toen India The Satanic Verses verbood, veroordeelde Rushdie de maatregel en beschuldigde hij de regering ervan te hebben gehandeld zonder het boek zelfs maar te hebben gelezen. In een open brief aan premier Rajiv Gandhi, gepubliceerd in The New York Times in 1988, bekritiseerde hij het verbod als “antidemocratisch” en “opportunistisch”.

De Duivelsverzen leidden ook tot een fatwa van de Iraanse Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, waardoor Rushdie in 1989 moest onderduiken. Na verloop van tijd dook hij weer op toen de Iraanse regering in 1998 verklaarde dat ze de fatwa niet zou handhaven. Zijn openbaarheid  werd echter verbroken toen hij in 2022 op een literair festival in New York op het podium werd aangevallen, waardoor hij blind werd aan één oog – een traumatische gebeurtenis waarover hij vertelt in zijn recente memoires Knife, dit jaar finalist voor de National Book Award.
