Farming, food security, and farm labor are just part of the list of issues addressed by UVA programs. The impact is huge for Charlottesville, but also for Virginia and the nation.

In this episode of Generative Dialogues, Mark Carrigan and Helen Beetham discuss the implications of recent developments in academic publishing and generative AI. Key topics include:
- The Taylor & Francis deal with Microsoft: Discussion of the £8 million agreement for AI access to the publisher’s library and its implications for academic publishing.
- The changing landscape of academic journals: How the traditional journal system is evolving towards platform-based models and the role of AI in this transition.
- The political economy of academic publishing: Analysis of the profit motives driving publishers and how AI fits into their business strategies.
- Peer review challenges: Examination of existing issues in the peer review process and how AI might exacerbate or potentially address these problems.
- The impact on academic careers and reputation: How AI and platform-based publishing may affect scholarly visibility, citation metrics, and career progression.
- Inequalities in academic publishing: Discussion of how AI and data-driven systems may reinforce existing hierarchies and inequalities in academia.
- Environmental concerns: Brief mention of the ecological impact of AI-driven publishing and research practices.
- Alternatives to traditional publishing: Exploration of potential alternatives, including open-access models, artisanal approaches to academic writing, and community-led publishing initiatives.
- The role of theory in digital education: Reflection on how theoretical frameworks can inform our understanding of these technological shifts in academia.
Throughout the conversation, Mark and Helen balance critical analysis of current trends with cautious exploration of potential positive developments and alternatives. They emphasize the need for academics to engage critically with these changes while recognizing the complex systemic nature of the challenges faced.

No I don't want to pay for a subscription to read your website without trackers.
How about you give me the options to freely browse your website without trackers or pay me for my data?#PayOrOkay #PayWall #cookies #trackers #ShittyWeb #SurveillanceCapitalism #privacy #DataJustice

Do you have alternative phrases to "for privacy reasons"?
I often get asked why I don't have/use WhatsApp, Zoom etc.
I usually reply "for privacy reasons", but I don't think that's the best option. People probably often think I have a higher need for privacy than they do. Maybe even, that I'm doing illegal or immoral stuff.Describing the exact reason "because I don't want surveillance capitalists to make billions with my stolen data" might not be the best choice either, because people will be overwhelmed.
Now I'm thinking that maybe a simple "for ethical/moral reasons" is the best choice, as it conveys, that those are not good choices, without imposing my opinion on them. If they are intrigued about what I mean, they will ask.
What do you usually say? What do you think might be a good option? Discuss.

The first keynote is by Linnet Taylor, speaking about data justice and big data. “New data sources and methods come at a price: experimentation becomes the norm, and accountability diminishes”
Incredibly important work, great to see this as the keynote!

As if digital colonialism were not so obvious, I have just learned of the existence of a collective - associated with a university - that claims to talk about data in the Global South but operates from.... Amsterdam... and their latest articles are about... Germany... and its editors seem to be... mostly European. #DigitalColonialism #DataJustice
