  7. Just stumbled across feministspatialpractices.com – expanding index of feminism in relation to the built environment. The website brings together feminist spatial practices from around the world. Looks really relevant for anyone interested in how feminism reshapes cities and spaces.

It was initiated by Bryony Roberts and Abriannah Aiken as a contribution to the e-flux exhibition Chronograms of Architecture:

  8. Towards the end of his life, Warren Magnusson implored us to imagine radical democratic engagement "premised on the 'open city' rather than the closed nation".

Would that we'd heed that profoundly wise insight.

  12. @ranjodh

    About the call:

Cities brim over with #speculation. Urban futures are conceived, dreamt of and calculated through a wide variety of speculative practices. Where finance has long speculated on cities, and the #city has served as a playground for sociological thought and more recently #datascience, the city has also become a test bed in the register of #smartcities and #platformurbanism. At the same time, the actors involved in urban speculation have expanded, from urban planners to data scientists and smart city consultants to #BigTech. Through tests and experiments, #technology is deployed to speculate on cultural, social and economic life in the city, and thus puts a claim on cities’ technoscientific futures. How has Big Tech normalized and monopolized speculations on #urbanfutures? What do these futures (potentially) look like? How do urbanites interfere in these mostly black-boxed prophecies and business models? And how are anti-speculations / speculative otherwises performed?

  13. To ask »“what if?,” diagrams offer a platform for the exploration of the spatial, social, and political implications of an initial hypothesis, and for organization and contradictions to play out.«

Christoph Lueder uses diagrams to make sense of 2 utopian imaginations that are almost five centuries apart:

  14. Yesterday @tomduscher and his MA students of #InformationDesign at #MuthesiusKH visited us at #FHPotsdam. We had a pleasant exchange on designing, researching and prototyping interactive #DataVis projects - especially in the context of #SciComm, #UrbanFutures and #CulturalHeritage.

    Thank you for the visit!

  15. while many car commercials appeal to individual freedom, this commercial by Swedish public transit firm Västtrafik uses a physicalization of CO2 emissions to appeal to the merit of traveling together:

… of course this is a reference to the 1991 photo by the city of Münster

  16. I’d never spent so much of my spare time on exploring a social media platform until Mastodon. It’s absolutely worthwhile to take some time to get into this real community-like platform and connect to different communities.
    P.S. Is there a circle of academics who self-define as #urbanists? We really need a group like this #cities #urbanism #digitalisation #smartcities #urbaninnovation #urbanfutures #urbanstudies #urbangeography #digitalsociety #citizens #citizenscience

  17. "The invention of the city as a place of experimental gatherings—despite impediments and without guarantees of progress—amplifies the South’s enduring contribution to urban knowledge and life. Across streets both nurturing and brutal, events can easily switch and undermine the best laid plans and intentions. Yet the possibility remains for residents to turn to each other, rather than on each other, for new ideas and solidarities."

  18. CW: teaching

there is power in numbers: in my reading group course everyone will write a short survey paper on a specific #urbanfutures topic. at half-time of the semester (which is now), everyone reads everyone's abstracts to exchange feedback and suggestions. everyone gets lots of advice, encouragement, and pointers. peer-review FTW!

  19. there are instances related to visualization, HCI & digital humanities on the #fediverse, but what about folks into #Urbanism #UrbanDesign #Cycling #WalkableCities #UrbanPlanning #UrbanFutures you ask?

there seems to be a friendly place just for you, too: urbanists.social

  20. With his talk »the city is a witness« Omar Ferwati shares a range of impressive investigations by #ForensicArchitecture and how different forms of civic evidence can be gathered and mounted to counter unlawful killings, human rights violations, illegal mining… Omar mentioned the image complex as a key method to integrate and cross-reference multiple sources:

  21. first up Lara Stöhlmacher shares a range of feminist projects in the space of participatory architecture. the talk is titled »MESS« - since the complicated allows for multiple stories to emerge… lots to digest - what i found particularly intriguing was a project on gossip as a form of resistance and care. fem-arc.net
