This will be one of our very first (non-woody) wildflowers (someone else beat them those pics to come!)- nothing open yet 3 days ago, there could be by now, I'll check again soon... I love the early leaves anyway- Caltha like many plants has extra red/purple pigments in the emerging leaves- this may help them withstand the inevitable cold nights or even days after emergence!

Snow was right on time for the #CrossQuarterDay between Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice- marking the #TimeOfIce -beginning of the #winter season in the traditional #Latvian calendar. The days since have been mild, but shadows long, shade and breezes chilly, temperature dropping rapidly as soon as the sun is below the trees or behind clouds so the winter season is definitely at hand, even if it is yet to get deeply cold (we've had nights probably had -10/-12C 14-10F)

#Spring is a time for a lot of traditional + #pagan celebrations. Here's a post of mine from last year for Ūsiņš Day the #Latvian celebration for the #CrossQuarterDay around #MayDay though Christianisation has often bumped it up to April 23- nearly on top of #Easter this year. I'm happy to lump them all together- the first flowers, warming weather, the greening soon to come, renewal of life- and some chocolate! I'll be out looking for bees today. #SeasonalRhythms #nature
