  4. I joined a Signal group called "Sovereign Tech", where me and my fellow geeks geek out and brainstorm various ways to have #DataSovereignty, independent of Big Tech. We're a bunch of longtime, crusty, jaded #Linux hardcores, pretty much.
I made a video for them showing my own "Sovereign Stack". It's a bunch of #RaspberryPi s, #OpenSource software, #Heimdall, #Wireguard, and lots of "split DNS" . I show off some #SelfHosting web services like #CalibreWeb , #InvoiceNinja, #Flarum, #CopyParty and #Immich , with remote access through Wireguard possible. **If you aren't a geek, you probably won't enjoy this video.**

  9. @bryan Although your trick is cool, and I respect the use of the piping between commands, **the #infosec community advises against the scp command now**.

BTW: you could have also used FTP, which was SSL encrypted (transparently creates a tar-like stream of data in the same way). It's also maximally fast across the available bandwidth (will beat SMB, SFTP, etc, especially on many small files being transferred).

#Copyparty has such an FTP-over-SSL feature, just saying. #OpenSource

  14. Ridiculous design choice in #Icecubes for the #iPad : you can't download a vid until you press a a small i with a circle around it, for more information, presumably. The download button is buried three taps deep. It's not a first class button, but is rather a third class button: 1) i with a circle, 2) Upload icon, 3) upload to where? "Save Video", with a down arrow. That's the download button you were wanting.

    Totally unergonomic. i -> Upload -> Download.

About as easy as bestowing 30 lives on yourself when playing Contra on the original Nintendo. I truly save these videos (and photos) later on in bulk to #Copyparty, exfiltrating them from the "Walled Garden" of the "Photos" app - where the Videos are confusingly also stored.

It's so simple that it's complicated. All this to try to hide the existence of a logical and usable filesystem

  19. #copyparty does this neat thing where it uploads files by file size ordering (smallest first, biggest last) and usually this means that it shows a big-ass remaining-time estimate at first, which then gets smaller

  31. Sometimes you just need a simple file server. Copyparty runs in Docker with two files and takes about 5 minutes to set up. No fluff, just files.

  36. Finally managed to make a quadlet of #copyparty (took a little too long because I accidentally mismatched the volume names).

    The thing

    • is absurdly fast
    • has a UI that's all over the place
    • uses abbreviations everywhere (gah)
    • is left aligned rather than centered (my neck)
    • has no x margins (ugh)

  40. At a big box store they had a rack of 2TB WD MyBooks on clearance. Someone had accidentally included a few 8TB ones, all marked with the same price. I snapped one up and it's now happily plugged into my little BSD machine. I've been playing around with Copy Party and I like it. I'd like to see what else is available for self hosted cloud apps but search is so polluted these days, all I get is ads for cloud providers and guides on setting up SMB. Any suggestions? #BSD #copyparty #selfhost
