  1. A MIDSUMMER NIGHT´S DREAM

  2. Heute sehe ich mir in der Deutschen Oper Berlin
    A MIDSUMMER NIGHT´S DREAM
    von Benjamin Britten an.

Es ist das erste Mal, dass ich diese Oper, die nach Shakespeare’s Sommernachtstraum entstand, sehe.

Heute Abend Premiere "The Turn of the Screw"
Die gruselige Novelle von Henry James wurde bereits unter dem Titel "The Haunting of Bly Manor" für Netflix verfilmt. Benjamin Brittens Vertonung von "The Turn of the Screw" ist ein packender Psychothriller im Kammeropernformat

  4. “A New Year Carol” AKA “Levy Dew” is a Welsh folk song that originates in the Pembrokeshire region of Southwest Wales. This version is set to music composed by Benjamin Britten in the early 1930s using words compiled by English poet and folklorist Walter de la Mare ( youtu.be/c9Yr4w4ZWiw?si=Vzrk8Q) It’s kind of a weird little song that has a lot of interpretations ranging from referring to some version of Mary Magdalen or maybe simply about the first dew of the year idk idk

  5. Also: it includes pieces set to music by Benjamin Britten (Diversions), Arvo Pärt (Fratres), Igor Stravinsky (Circus Polka), Bach, Hayden, Mozart, ...

The performers include dancers who I remember from when my dad first took me to the Ballet, when I was a young kid, but also more recent favourites, including: Lydia Bustinduy, Prince Credell, Jorge Nozal, Jianhui Wang, Roger van der Poel, Parvaneh Scharafali, Lukas Timulak.

And: Sol Leon and Paul Lightfoot perform! I only every experienced them as choreographers, never as dancers. I literally cried when I saw that they're on the program. This is huge!

Thank you for the link, what a gift!

A remarkable piece, in a remarkable performance. Very moving.

I was moved to look for biographical background. Britten wrote the piece in 1942, in times as fragile as ours. He and Peter Pears returned from the US to England, on a Swedish cargo ship. German U-boats were active on the Atlantic, so this was no holiday trip. On a stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Britten had picked up a book of medieval poems, which during the voyage he turned into this extended piece.

From the medieval text: Christ's coming is "to rifle satans fold - all hell doth at his presence quake." Apt for these fraught times (his and ours).

You can't leave out Maggi Hambling's Scallop on Aldeburgh Beach - a tribute to fellow local Benjamin Britten with a quotation in cut-out lettering from his opera, Peter Grimes: "I hear those voices that will not be drowned"

  15. And here’s the second half of the song cycle “Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, Opus No. 22”(tinyurl.com/nx7nufhk) from the same 1956 Japanese performance. Shortly before Britten’s passing, Pears declared this piece to be both his favorite of Britten’s compositions and the most meaningful to them both.

  16. Forgot to mention that Britten wrote “Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, Opus No. 22” in the original Italian that Michelangelo used, which was a challenge for both Britten & Pears as they primarily worked in English language music

  18. Benjamin Britten & Peter Pears met in 1937 and quickly became friends, creative collaborators and lovers. Their partnership lasted for 40yrs (Britten passed in 1976) Pears was Britten’s muse and inspired him to center his operatic & choral work around the tenor voice/range.- including five song cycles. Due to the criminalization of Homosexuality at the time, they lived publicly closeted lives but were as close to “married” as possible in private
