I ended up kinda hating “Les Mis” as an overall show when I played Eponine as a teen as part of Houston Opera concerts but this part always really stuck me as a really special moment

And finally, “do you hear the people sing?” (https://youtu.be/2crRmKlbfxM?is=1W0D8X0xblxhulVa) from the legendary 10th Anniversary Dream cast of Les Miserables

Apparently, Paul Robeson sang this live on the set of “Show Boat” but the microphones couldn’t pick up his bass voice very well so they had to use a recording of him singing

“Ol’ Man River” (https://youtu.be/df4VdyGIqJ8?is=FbN-t6jqkxXhDLrO) features music composed by Jerome Kernand lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II for the musical “Show Boat”. It’s about the struggles of Black American. Here it’s performed by Paul Robeson

@otheorange_tag I just have a freakishly good memory which has helped me with such extremely vital for everyday life things like being captain of the academic decathlon/quiz bowl team in middle school-college, being able to do readings of Poetry/prose/monologues, memorizing all of that info from med school & memorizing sheet music 🙃
#SymSat -
Not gonna lie this movement always makes me feel kinda claustrophobic
#SymSat -
If I hadn't hit my head so hard and often in childhood, I could probably play more from memory. I do loop over and over ESO and KCO's music, it does seem to help, although I still need music, for some reason :-) #SymSat
-
The final movement is “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues” (https://youtu.be/b9FHryvghrc?is=xz-VolrfQRIiNKQQ) which was written to somewhat imitate the sounds of dangerous cotton mill machinery

@analgesicsleep @MatthewTitus88 There are times when I'm practicing double bass that I bring one of those spray bottles, too afraid to use it during a concert #SymSat
-
@otheorange_tag @MatthewTitus88 for a split second I always think he’s gonna pour the water on his head after that marathon 😶
#SymSat -
Ref won't let me make the joke a third time, I'll have to tag @MatthewTitus88 #SymSat

Movement 3: “Down by the Riverside” (https://youtu.be/K7aFQMJUS5E?is=1DnFvBuliXpy-k2c) is based on the popular traditional African-American spiritual later turned into an anti-war anthem.

There’s no way I could play this at the proper speed without dying
#SymSat -
I've .... ... got .... ... sunshine..... I'lve ....gooot .... rhythm.... #SymSat
-
@MatthewTitus88 Yabbut not Bolero 237 bars of the same thing in the 2nd violins repetitive. I'm kinda surprised the double basses only have 162? bars of the same thing. #SymSat
-
@analgesicsleep I've got old eyes, I spend a lot of time trying to cut and paste every single page turn away, Works about 80% of the pieces, the other 20% usually we have enough rests to turn the pages, but not always. #SymSat
-
@otheorange_tag I’ve tried doing that but I get lost too easily if I’m not using a hard copy of music/score (at least until I memorize a piece then I find using anything to be distracting)
#SymSat -
Onto Movement 2: “Whose Side Are You On?” (https://youtu.be/euppwaLbByA?is=okJ-lhKrpgKbF02c) is based on the 1931 labor song written during the Harlan County War (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlan_County_War)

Oh, I thought he was going to use his phone to read the music, I've seen people do that in practices, it's weird. #SymSat

And now here’s Movement 1: “Dreadful Memories” (After Aunt Molly Jackson) (https://youtu.be/Mq4mofOff8k?is=rRCiQ9fwM8-urfT_) which is part of piece “Four North American Ballads" composed by Polish-American Pianist and composer Frederic Rzewski (April 13, 1938- June 26, 2021). He is considered to be one of the most important contemporary classical composers of his generation. This movement tells the story of Kentucky coal miners.

Following that with a quick blip of the labor anthem “Solidarity Forever” (https://youtu.be/Smm4myFWN-w?is=g34AZImSUwSXkb8P) performed by Elise Bryant, director of the Labor Heritage Foundation and leader of the DC Labor Chorus. It was written & composed by American writer, artist and labor activist Ralph Chaplin in 1915.

First up we have “Joe Hill” AKA “I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night” (https://youtu.be/B0bezsMVU7c?is=2rFFxK2Bi2FWEc0W) performed by performer/lawyer/NFL football player/activist Paul Robeson for Scottish miners in their union canteen during a 1949 trip to the UK. “Joe Hill” was written & composed by American composer Earl Robinson in 1936 about the American trade unionist Joe Hill who was allegedly framed on a murder charge and executed in 1915.

Up next is a series of short pieces by Hungarian pianist, composter and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók (March 25, 1881-September 26, 1945) (https://youtu.be/8pOgjMyrIbw?si=wV783t8CxXMtpzKH) The original form of this was a sonatina for piano, composed in 1915ish based on Romanian and Romani Folk dances but it kind of snowballed from there into the full orchestral piece that is now known as “Transylvanian Dances, SZ 96/BB 120b” by the 1930s.
