  3. I ended up kinda hating “Les Mis” as an overall show when I played Eponine as a teen as part of Houston Opera concerts but this part always really stuck me as a really special moment
    #SymSat

  4. And finally, “do you hear the people sing?” (youtu.be/2crRmKlbfxM?is=1W0D8X) from the legendary 10th Anniversary Dream cast of Les Miserables
    #SymSat

  5. Apparently, Paul Robeson sang this live on the set of “Show Boat” but the microphones couldn’t pick up his bass voice very well so they had to use a recording of him singing

  6. “Ol’ Man River” (youtu.be/df4VdyGIqJ8?is=FbN-t6) features music composed by Jerome Kernand lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II for the musical “Show Boat”. It’s about the struggles of Black American. Here it’s performed by Paul Robeson

  7. It's all fun and games until ... someone just lost an arm? #SymSat

  8. @otheorange_tag I just have a freakishly good memory which has helped me with such extremely vital for everyday life things like being captain of the academic decathlon/quiz bowl team in middle school-college, being able to do readings of Poetry/prose/monologues, memorizing all of that info from med school & memorizing sheet music 🙃
    #SymSat

  9. Not gonna lie this movement always makes me feel kinda claustrophobic
    #SymSat

  10. If I hadn't hit my head so hard and often in childhood, I could probably play more from memory. I do loop over and over ESO and KCO's music, it does seem to help, although I still need music, for some reason :-) #SymSat

  11. The final movement is “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues” (youtu.be/b9FHryvghrc?is=xz-Vol) which was written to somewhat imitate the sounds of dangerous cotton mill machinery

  12. @analgesicsleep @MatthewTitus88 There are times when I'm practicing double bass that I bring one of those spray bottles, too afraid to use it during a concert #SymSat

  13. @otheorange_tag @MatthewTitus88 for a split second I always think he’s gonna pour the water on his head after that marathon 😶
    #SymSat

  14. Ref won't let me make the joke a third time, I'll have to tag @MatthewTitus88 #SymSat

  15. Movement 3: “Down by the Riverside” (youtu.be/K7aFQMJUS5E?is=1DnFvB) is based on the popular traditional African-American spiritual later turned into an anti-war anthem.

  16. There’s no way I could play this at the proper speed without dying
    #SymSat

  17. I've .... ... got .... ... sunshine..... I'lve ....gooot .... rhythm.... #SymSat

  18. @MatthewTitus88 Yabbut not Bolero 237 bars of the same thing in the 2nd violins repetitive. I'm kinda surprised the double basses only have 162? bars of the same thing. #SymSat

  19. @analgesicsleep I've got old eyes, I spend a lot of time trying to cut and paste every single page turn away, Works about 80% of the pieces, the other 20% usually we have enough rests to turn the pages, but not always. #SymSat

  20. @otheorange_tag I’ve tried doing that but I get lost too easily if I’m not using a hard copy of music/score (at least until I memorize a piece then I find using anything to be distracting)
    #SymSat

  21. Oh, I thought he was going to use his phone to read the music, I've seen people do that in practices, it's weird. #SymSat

  22. What's a mmn mnnmsm smsms ansnn weight?! :ablobcatgooglymlemjumping: #JokeCount2 #SymSat

  23. And now here’s Movement 1: “Dreadful Memories” (After Aunt Molly Jackson) (youtu.be/Mq4mofOff8k?is=rRCiQ9) which is part of piece “Four North American Ballads" composed by Polish-American Pianist and composer Frederic Rzewski (April 13, 1938- June 26, 2021). He is considered to be one of the most important contemporary classical composers of his generation. This movement tells the story of Kentucky coal miners.

  35. Mama Who Bore Me (youtu.be/7yhIxX-y6Z0?si=zBEGCV) is from Coming-of-Age Rock musical “Spring Awakening” based on the 1891 German play of the same name. It was composed by Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik (yes, the same guy who wrote “Barely Breathing” (youtu.be/A-oh-tP6RvA?si=DXY2Bz) !) A lullaby, the music contrasts with the lyrics about a young teenager’s frustration at being unprepared for harsh realities of the world

  36. “Credo” (youtu.be/NInltwWFL74?si=gxC_TN) is a 7-part cantata written in 1967 set to the 1904 W. E. B. Du Bois' prose poem of the same name. It’s notable for its blending of Western classical and N*gro Spiritual traditions. Each of the movements in “Credo” begins with a statement of belief and then goes on to center black historical figures and settings in a way that marries both ancestry with modern times (extra images added for alttext)

  38. So… yeah, It’s Pianist, composer and conductor André Previn’s (April 6, 1929 – February 28, 2019) birthday today so here he is with Canadian Jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) on Previn’s PBS show “Previn and the Pittsburgh”. They do a little chatting and a casually mindblowing improvised Jazz duet (youtu.be/51fUTDWhXys?si=FM_bQV)
