Of course, we’re starting with “Summertime” (https://youtu.be/eUzzaJl4KJM?is=GF-R_DkxRxcVxq1D) from the 1935 opera “ Porgy and Bess”. It was composed by George Gershwin and the lyrics are from DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. This jazz-inspired lullaby is first sung by the devout yet tragic wife & mother Clara to her child, and is reprised throughout the opera. It’s considered to be one of the most covered songs in the world with over 25,000 different versions!

While “In the Bleak Midwinter” is about the nativity, it’s setting is in the winter which doesn’t line up with the generally accepted time of Christ’s birth (springtime. Also, it rarely snows in Palestine, even less so in the spring??) and some have theorized that the use of “winter” is a metaphor but.. who knows what Rossetti was thinking
