  1. Just finished disassembling a late-Intel-era Macbook Pro to remove the spicy pillows from it, and I gotta say, I am not impressed with Apple's hardware engineering on it.

I'm not talking about them gluing the cells of the battery to the case - that's been discussed to death, and was unnecessary. I'm talking about some other rather bad choices made during design.

Specifically: fasteners. In general, you want the fewest different types of threaded fasteners possible in your design. Fewer parts to keep in stock, fewer possible mistakes when assembling and disassembling units, etc. And Apple utterly failed this design rule.

It's like each separate part in this machine is held in with 3 different fasteners. Sometimes that's unavoidable in a design; you're using machine screw #1 for most things, but there's one that has to go into this particular place where it can't be as deep/long or there isn't room for the same head or something. But in this case, most of the fasteners are different for no very good reason. There's room for them to have used a common screw for many of the cases where they just ... didn't.

Paying the Apple tax for this kind of janky design (and user-hostile repairability) is just insulting.

"Designed badly in California, manufactured in China".

  6. When I bought my #Apple M4 Mac Mini in 2024, I opted for a thunderbolt NVME external SSD enclosure instead of paying the storage #appletax . For 2TB, that decision saved me about AUD $900
    - Apple 2TB Mac Mini upgrade: $1,200
    - Enclosure + 2TB SSD: $305

Over the weekend, the enclosure died, the built in fan started whirring. Probably just needs a clean, but I lacked the tool to open the enclosure up. So I bought another enclosure same model / spec.

So now my decision to avoid the apple tax has reduced in ROI. From ~$900 saving to about $780.

Given I’ve been using the storage to hold many LLM models of different sizes, I think my decision has over time still paid off.

Side note: today 2TB SSD equivalent is about double (AUD ~$320 give or take) the price of what I paid late 2024 (AUD $163). Either that, or I got a very good deal on the SSD.

  7. 🎉🎊 Oh look, Epic's victory dance about the "end of the Apple Tax"—as if they haven't just swapped one corporate overlord for another! Meanwhile, Apple sulks in the corner, planning its next strategy to keep those golden gates firmly shut. 🔒🍏

"Apple to Debut New Gaming App"

    youtube.com/watch?v=uE1-7EBlZRY

For me it is quite obvious they knew the chance they where going to lose was high. This "debut" has been cooking for a long time, as a way to try and find new revenue streams for the now lost 30% #AppStore mandatory cut.

It will be interesting to find out who are the first to sign up.

  10. Having the battery replaced in my iPhone 13 is around 90€ (with original parts), more expensive than a brand new Android phone (with battery). 🤯 #appletax

  11. ➡️ Important for iPhone / Apple users:

If you want to support your favorite creator via Patreon:

🔴 Do *NOT* use the iOS Patreon App to subscribe!

Reason: You will pay 30% more! 😮
(This money goes directly to Apple, not your creator!)

🌻 Solution: Use Patreon's website in a browser to subscribe.

  12. All it took was a $50 Apple adapter to get my bundle of SSDs up and running in their new enclosure. It’s good to have them back! #AppleTax

  13. Not making another full post, but the M4-equipped #MacBook Pro today is just as #ludicrous.

A maxed-out 14" #MBP is over (CDN) $9000, without extra software or warranty upgrades.

Nine grand! For a 14" laptop.

  14. Tempted to pull the trigger on a new Mac Mini to replace my cursed Mac Pro. Maxed out (64G RAM/8TB SSD), it's C$6807 (after tax). And it only has 3 Thunderbolt & 2 USB ports!

C$3000 #AppleTax is insane for 8TB of SSD storage. WD's 8TB SSD stick is C$1300, but would take up another port.

Best way to connect 3 4K@60 displays to just 1 Thunderbolt port?

    #macMini

  15. Aah, more #AppleTax. Thanks so much...

No dog in this fight personally, but it seems disingenuous to be fighting against the so-called #AppleTax that made them rich beyond their wildest dreams while Spotify continues to lose 💰 hand over fist and Epic Games is not publicly traded. 🤷‍♂️

  21. I find it #hilarious that the official #Apple #Canada store has "#refurbished" -- i.e., #used -- #Macs that go up to $10k, without even considering the "pro" line. And those are only M2s! Oh, and they're Studios, so that doesn't include the #monitor. Or #keyboard. Or #mouse. Or anything but the power cord...

    But sure, there's no #AppleTax .

  22. @chad

I would say yes, the upgrade from 16GB to 32GB is important (but Apple's ridiculous pricing means I can't say "worth it"...).

My current company originally gave me a MBP with 16GB, and it was pretty dog-slow as a result; certainly enough to notice all ... the ... damn ... time. Got a replacement with 32GB, and performance went from abysmal to acceptable.

16GB would be enough for a casual user, doing regular, non-demanding things in a web browser most of the time.

  23. Anything that makes the web feel smaller is good for business. A #SocialWeb browser would be a VC's wet dream:

Bake-in some open source social features, like #microPub, #ActivityStream, and #RSS. Then smother it with a proprietary layer and ad network.

It would be like AOL for social media— nothing but shopping and free user-generated content.

Best of all, since it's a browser, you side-step the #AppleTax, so anything we sign up for we'd have to call to cancel. Just like AOL, too. Wow.

  24. CW: Long thread/4

But at least you can buy audiobooks on Apple Books. There are plenty of services whose gross margins are lower than 30%. Apple's 30% #AppTax renders these unviable, and if Apple doesn't deign to offer its own in-house monopoly version, the service is simply unavailable as an iPhone app.

But that's not the only bad outcome. Some lucky service providers are able to pay the #AppleTax by gouging Apple's *customers*, raising prices to pay the danegeld. That's the second effect.

  27. Hey iOS users. I recommend comparing your subscriptions you have through Apple with the sites of the places you have subscriptions with. Sometimes they are 30% cheaper if you pay the company directly.

  28. Free #GitHub accounts comes with 2,000 #GitHubActions minutes per month. Awesome for #foss and science 🙏

⚠️ Be careful, though. If you do lots of #macOS testing, you burn through those quickly. Each minute on macOS consumes 10 minutes of your account. #AppleTax 😠 (On MS Windows, the scale factor is 2)

So, you get 2,000 wall-time minutes on #Linux, but if you run only on macOS, you only get 200 wall-time minutes.
