  1. @campbell Yeah. That’s the other thing. A lot of the information out there is from like iOS 12 or whatever and no longer apply. It’s a ton of really janky and unreliable trial and error. I have something *kinda* working but I’m afraid to do anything more with it. #janky

  2. Just finished disassembling a late-Intel-era Macbook Pro to remove the spicy pillows from it, and I gotta say, I am not impressed with Apple's hardware engineering on it.

I'm not talking about them gluing the cells of the battery to the case - that's been discussed to death, and was unnecessary. I'm talking about some other rather bad choices made during design.

Specifically: fasteners. In general, you want the fewest different types of threaded fasteners possible in your design. Fewer parts to keep in stock, fewer possible mistakes when assembling and disassembling units, etc. And Apple utterly failed this design rule.

It's like each separate part in this machine is held in with 3 different fasteners. Sometimes that's unavoidable in a design; you're using machine screw #1 for most things, but there's one that has to go into this particular place where it can't be as deep/long or there isn't room for the same head or something. But in this case, most of the fasteners are different for no very good reason. There's room for them to have used a common screw for many of the cases where they just ... didn't.

Paying the Apple tax for this kind of janky design (and user-hostile repairability) is just insulting.

"Designed badly in California, manufactured in China".

  3. Just did a definitely #janky and very unsafe, but also perfectly reversible modification to my #amstrad #ppc640
Now let's see if it will burn my house down 😅
  4. And so the #stories about #refactoring start to appear. I expect that some of them will be contentious. Arguably, that’s the point. The translation from one public #cloud provider to another isn’t one-to-one. There are opportunities to use proven vendor tools instead of #janky custom ones. To rigidly and rigorously separate concerns. No, it won’t be painless. But it will hurt worse, for longer, if we let it fester.

  5. I've finally taken the next step with figuring out how to have some sort of decent voice support in Home Assistant. I mean, other than relying on Google Devices.

The picture below shows my completely ridiculous setup for voice recognition:

Total cost: $0, but that's because I reused all the hardware.

I got a RPI4 connected to an iLuv something or other Bluetooth speaker whose battery is completely shot, and a Blue Snowball USB microphone.

I'm running this on the RPI:

    github.com/rhasspy/wyoming-sat

Janky as hell, but it works. As I see it, this is really a minimum setup for experimentation. The Atom M5 Echo does not hold a candle.

    This is only the beginning.

  6. My video said

"Trying to make creepy content for a dark poem with no energy to sit at my PC looks like..."

If you're interested in the poem it's on my now less #janky website

That's all in this hoot train

    Tysm for reading

  7. Today, I improved the janky fix of my Artillery Genius Pro. I properly mounted the transistors and put ferrules on all ofy cable-ends (Artillery had them on all ends already which came from the factory)

  8. My #janky #3dprinting #setup with my #elegoo Neptune 4! There are excuses... But it is (nearly) ready for my first ASA-print!

  9. Flatbed scanning adventures: made myself a somewhat adjustable holder out of watercolor paper. Not super efficient but getting better results 🥳

I need access to a 3D printer and up my modeling game, until then

  10. Of course, if my furnaces today used that design, I wouldn't be #ranting.

I have two #furnaces - at the time this home was built, it was the style here to put in two furnaces, one for the upstairs, and one for the main floor and basement. Kind of like a really #janky #zone system. I replaced both of them when I bought this #house.

Well, last #winter, the blower motor in one #died. It's kind of nice having two; the house was #chilly but #livable while I was getting it #fixed.

  11. I usually keep old computers and find new uses for them. As an example, Squirrelmob runs on an old Lenovo Yoga. I’ve given old laptops to family as well. As well as given old desktops to friends and family where they would benefit more.

This ROG Flow may be the first one I’m really considering selling and replacing with a proper computer without janky hacks.

It’s pretty okay for gaming if you don’t mind the jank.

  12. Attempted to use Fedora Workstation 38 today on my laptop. Got most of everything I wanted working. The one thing that didn’t work is kinda unique to the stupid hardware choices I made.

I have an Asus ROG Flow X13 with the RTX3080 dock.

This is already janky in Windows. The jank just doesn’t work well in Linux, and never has.

    So…back to Windows, I guess.

  13. It is too expensive living here for shit to be this janky.

  14. Theory of Jank
(transplanted and extended from a #twitter version)

Every long term system, whether natural, human or technological, will be #janky ie. poorly specified & thrown together in ad hoc fashion. Simple systems are incomplete, and accrete #jank until they're (mostly) fit for purpose. If a simple system can't adapt, it will be replaced by one that can (eg. eaten by a bear 🐻).

Under this theory, systems (including ones composed of people) don't really learn or adapt. The current owners just hack new things onto/into/under/around/out of them until they're more-or-less ok, or it becomes less effort to just pull the whole thing down and start over.

Sometimes there'll be attempts to fight #jank, but these will ultimately be defeated by the balance between adding features vs. fighting entropy, and features almost always win, because the alternative is stagnation and death. If a system faces existential risk due to jank, the jank will be repaired, but only to the point that new features can be added, at which point the jank will continue.

External impressions can be that a system is smooth, efficient, resilient, streamlined and free of jank (a cockroach), but this only happens after a long period with several existential crises to beat the rough edges off the system, and generally locks the design in amber. Regardless of external appearances, the interior will always remain soft, weird and squishy.

  15. About to miss our connecting flight because of #airline jankiness.

I'm so sick of this country's love affair with #janky ass #infrastructure.

  16. #ChicagoIndex email just arrived. Anyone can just click and take their survey! Like, say, CTU minions pushing #BrandonJohnson! Don't fall for the results, though I know many of you will. #Janky #Journalism #JournalismEthics #Polls #ChiMayor23

  17. Wow, the bare metal Home Assistant OS install process is janky as heck. I guess I have been spoiled for years.

Also, there's a certain level of comedy when you decide to break down and use a Ubuntu live image - grab an ISO off ubuntu and realize you already have 2 copies of the ISO when you see the (2) added to the download. 😅
