  1. Snakebird on the Dead Limb

This anhinga was trying to dry out on an old dead tree until I wandered by. I managed a few shots before the bird slipped beneath the water and vanished. Anhingas don’t float like most waterbirds — instead, they swim with their bodies submerged and only their heads above the surface, moving through the water with that unmistakably snake‑like look.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

Big harvest day. Lots of squash and a bucket of sweet potatoes.

As I dug sweet potatoes, I noticed a medium-sized snake watching me from about 3 feet away.

At 60° F / 15° C and cloudy, the snake was a little subdued, and it let me get a nice close-up with the phone. I think this one is a Redside Garter Snake.

  10. When a cat is "stropping", like this fine fellow here demonstrates, are they really sharpening their claws? Well, sort of. Firstly, they strop to mark their territory and advertise to potential mates, by depositing pheromones from their interdigital glands, as well as visually marking the tree.

But what about claw sharpening? Scratching your claws against a tree (or expensive couch) will as likely dull your claws as sharpen them. But the way a cat's claws grow, as most cat owners probably guess from finding the sheds,
is like a snake's skin. A new claw grows inside the old claw, and when ready, the dull claw sheds off, leaving the sharp new one ready for action. Stropping will often help to shed these old claws, thus "sharpening" the claw, albeit in a round-about fashion.

  11. The past couple of days have been good for random nature shots. I missed a couple of foxes and deer, but you get what you can.
The camouflaged hawk was in my front yard terrorizing the little birds.
The tiny ( 13cm ) grey snake was sunning on a walkway, and the bright green garter snake ( almost 1m ) sadly was dead in the street. On the walk this morning I saw an Eastern Box turtle trying to cross a six lane road with an impossible to cross median. It was half way across the first lane and was missed by several cars. I was able to grab it and move it to the other side of the street in a wooded area. My good deed for the day.

I co-authored this piece on cultivating trust in AI for disaster management. We cover all four disaster phases -- mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery -- and where transparency around training data and failure modes is lagging behind deployment.

If we want first responders to trust these tools, we have to earn it with openness.

  13. MTG thought to respond....

Oh he sent me an email, I think I’ll respond.

So yes, actually you did do something wrong President Trump, let’s first start with your broken campaign promises.
You protected your pedophile rapists friends instead of women who were raped when they were just teenage girls and you STILL REFUSE to release the Epstein files.
You started an unprovoked war with Iran that the vast majority of Americans do NOT support. You killed hundreds of children at a school in Iran and innocent people and are responsible for 21 U.S. service members deaths and 865 wounded. Your stupid war that you claim you have won like 50 times has destroyed our bases in the Middle East and hundreds of billions of dollars worth of military equipment and weapons, while depleting our weapons and ammunitions.
You are supporting, funding, and aiding genocide in Gaza that has resulted in approximately 22,000 children murdered, thousands of children with amputations, and over 70,000 orphans. And your so called Board of “Peace” has done nothing to stop war and is planning to oversee the very profitable reconstruction and take over of Gaza. One can only guess who all will get those blood money contracts, the Epstein class and associates.
And let’s talk about the basics that every single US president is supposed to guarantee to its citizens. Affordable cost of living and affordable fuel in which you have 100% failed to deliver and actually driven inflation and irresponsibly driven the cost of gasoline and diesel to record high levels.
So did you do something wrong?
Yes in summary, YOU are the snake that you warned us all about in the poem you read over and over.
You never cared about putting America first or making America great again.
You are the deep state, the Epstein class, and America last.
And my mistake was supporting you in the first place.

  14. HateSphere – Guillotine Review By Dr. A.N. Grier

How HateSphere has continued to find success after over twenty-five years playing their tried, true, and dated brand of Scandathrash is beyond me. With a catalog as inconsistent in quality as an Arizona highway, these Danes continue pounding out records like Mormon men with fourteen-person families. After two decades of personnel changes, the best thing going for the band is the surprise behind the mic. But since 2023’s Hatred Reborn, there haven’t been any real surprises behind the scenes. Minus a new drummer, founder Peter Lyse Karmark continues to lead the charge, even bringing back Mathia Uldall for vocal duties. With a touch more melody than the previous record, this year’s Guillotine delivers ten new tracks to either push the envelope or just… be.

Against better judgment, this will be the fourth time I review a HateSphere release. But I initially requested this prison sentence because I enjoyed records like Bloodred Hatred and The Great Bludgeoning. Not to mention, I’ve been a genre lover from the early days of At the Gates, The Haunted, and Witchery. But man, it’s been a rough few records of mediocrity and staleness. Because the entire structure hasn’t changed in the last three years, maybe Guillotine will start a focused era of output. Wait, why the fuck am I being positive?

This twelfth album opens with the aptly titled instrumental “Chapter XII.” After the soft, reverberating guitars, the distortion kicks in, and we are provided with one of the best riffs on the album.1 The opener sets the tone nicely, slingshotting us into the purely predictable but solid “Dogma.” Wrapped up tightly in every element that defines the band, “Dogma” aggressively barks and growls; guitars hammer and swirl; and alternates between groove and melody. But in the end, it’s nothing special; it’s the standard we expect from HateSphere.

Thankfully, there are a few exciting numbers, like the back-to-back “Cleansing” and “Snake Charmer.” The first opens with a standard melodic introduction before firing off into a fun main riff. When the vocals arrive, the guitars come and go, letting the bass rise to the surface. After clawing through massive overlaid barks and growls, it ends with a headbangable chug of pure bliss. “Snake Charmer” is an extra minute-plus, delivering sinister vibes and a razor-sharp riff straight from Witchery’s Don’t Fear the Reaper. Toss in some melodicness and a good balance of back-and-forth antics, and it’s a pleasing piece. For something a bit more Soilwork-meets-Dark Tranquillity, ensure you check out the catchy and punchy “Human Scum.”

But as is the case with most recent HateSphere records, filler pieces or duds distract or poison the flow. Unfortunately, it really hurts when it’s the first single and the title track. The main riff of “Guillotine” is the laziest attempt at Pantera’s “5 Minutes Alone.” I mean, I like the tone and direction, but then it drops into that slow, dissonant, overused guitar sound that bores the hell out of it. The best part is the riff transition at the end, but, ya know, it’s a bit late. “Bottom Feeder” is another slogger with a decent vocal approach, but it tries so hard to be old-school death that it never develops further than the character. The closer is the longest on the album and one of the biggest letdowns. “Heresy” feels like the expected album epic, and the band thought so too, but like “Guillotine,” it goes on and on, moving up and down for no reason, and consists of bruiser riffs and bully vocals that won’t end.

With a typical Tue Madsen master and early 2000s compression, Guillotine is just another in a long string of mixed HateSphere records. It has some kickass tunes, some predictable ones, and others that try so hard they become forgettable.2 That said, denying their drive and prolificity would make me a poser because I still come back to see if the next record breaks the mold. Guillotine has some interesting tweaks that freshen the palette for us old-time fans, but nothing cracks the surface that hasn’t been done numerous times over. But I didn’t hate everything, and what I did like will be added to my HateSphere playlist.
