  1. I was out front playing with Ruby and noticed a vulture circling overhead.
Then I saw a pair of [Pileated Woodpeckers](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pileated) on the tree next to me.
Whipped out the phone and managed to capture one of them. There is a hollow in the tree where they were perched.
    Looking for housing I guess.

  2. Sunset 23/11/25, Got a sliver of moon and some pinkish contrails too.

  3. Some sights while out walking with Ruby today. It was overcast and in the mid 50'sF ( ~12C) , nice for walking.
Saw an abandoned birdnest and some setting sun through trees.

  4. Out and about walking with Ruby I spied these things that caught my attention.
The tree bark of some kind of Elm, and a Preying Mantis.

  5. There is a light mist going on today. This squirrel is going to wait it out on the bird house.
I go a shot of another earlier in the year, different coloration, so a learned behavior?

  6. I've got some 'fun'gus growing in the backyard. The orange stuff ( perhaps Ganoderma sessile ) is surrounded by a blanket of spores that I try not to disturb. It's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow so they should wash away.
The brown and white one , Trametes versicolor (Turkey Tail) has been around for months. I finally got around to trying a couple of shots as the sun was coming up.
The local mosquito population is high enough to keep most backyard activities to a quick minimum, unless I suit up. But who has time for that when the light is good?

  7. This fairly large ( ~2cm ) hairy spider had spun a lovely web between a sign and trash can. Maybe a Barn Spider (Araneus cavaticus). Good hunting area.
The dew drops add some interest as well.

  8. While walking this morning we came across this box turtle in the middle of a small parking lot. It seemed to be having a bit of a hard time. It looks like one of it's front legs was missing claws.
This is the largest Eastern Box turtle I have seen this summer, the shell was about 6.5" (16 cm ). Since cars sometimes use the lot I moved it to a nearby wooded area.

  9. This chonky little critter was moving at a leisurely pace this morning. I'm guessing it was in search of a place to hide and metamorphise.

  10. Some sightings from around the 'hood.
Spider web with dew and some cool looking beetles on a bit of bark. They did not like the light.

  11. Ruby and I took a different walk this morning. Her preferred route was repaved yesterday and is a no-go for a week or at least a couple of rain storms.
She enjoys this park. It has an 'easy for an old guy' paved path, but lots of critter smells. Someone has a peacock in the area that was making a lot of noise, but otherwise peaceful.
The mosquitos weren't too bad and it was 20°C ( 68°F ) so very comfortable.

  12. The storm water retention pond up the street is very established. Always has a bunch of water.
They usually have a fountain running to keep the water aerated and mostly mosquito free.
For some reason it has been off for a week. So I got this shot. Pretty nice view first thing in the morning.

  13. couple of weeks ago I spotted a baby Eastern Box turtle in the park.
This one was in a different part of the park, a few hundred meters away. I think it was run over by a mower and killed. 🙁
So small, maybe 10cm. If it's still there after the bugs are done I might bring it home. Somewhere around here there is a full sized shell I found when I was a kid.
The #Sunset last night was pretty good. I was at a different vantage point than usual.

  14. Looked outside this morning and spied the overnight labor of an orb spider. Shining in the sun.
About 1m across and about 1.5m above the ground, anchored by a tree, the ground, and the raised bed critter guard. The center of the web was 2m away from any anchor point.
Grabbed the camera with the macro and grabbed some shot before the morning Ruby walk.
Lucky I did, it was gone when we returned, probably a bird got a face full of web. Better them than me.

  15. #Sunset 19/06/25 There had been a big thunderstorm about an hour before this picture. The sky was pinkish orange. Very pretty

  16. The morning started off a little warm after a pretty heavy rain at 3am.
The late morning walk turned out to be a lot warmer.
Spotted this Blue Heron resting on a water structure, held a nice pose.
The digital zoom on the phone is kind of potato though.

  17. CW: snake

The evening walk started out with this critter chilling ( or probably warming ) in the street.
Nice eastern rat snake. Ruby really wanted to get close, but I didn't want to stress the snake.
Lots of reptile sightings this spring.

  21. A thunderstorm is just passing through and I spied this critter waiting out the storm on top of a birdhouse in the yard.
Use your tail as an umbrella little guy.

  22. It has been turtle week for me. Saw this tiny Eastern Box in the tall grass at the park.
The green capsule is about 9cm ( 3.5" ) so this little one is about 7.6cm ( about 3" )
I hope the little critter survives the season.

  23. While taking out the trash I spotted this little critter, a Gray Treefrog (Dryophytes versicolor). So says image search.
It had just started to rain, and I guess this was a good place for a soak.
I had been hearing lots of amphibian songs in the evening, this was the first in person meeting.

  24. Meadow Buttercups ( Ranunculus acris )are blooming. Yard weed to some, solitary pollinator fiesta , pretty neat for a few days.

  25. Kind of a guy thing I just can’t quit.
Walking Ruby has us covering a lot of ground every day.
Sometimes in parks or residential streets, but often on secondary roads.
I tend to pick up bits of metal I see along the road. I see it as a “nice neighbor” kind of thing when I find nails, drywall/deck screws, and various sized bolts.
The biggest thing I have dragged home was a 15kg steel hook that probably fell off of a passing crane.
Most of the rusty stuff or bolts with bad threads go into the recycling.
The ‘good stuff’ gets sorted and stashed in the “odd bits I might need some day” jars.
    Today’s haul, so far.

  26. Pretty little flowers on this Oregon Grape caught my eye on a walk. It's warm today 28c ( 83F ). Everything is blooming.

  27. Just returned from a 2 hour walk. There is a 'nature park' about 2km from the house. It has a very wild terrain, criss crossed with paths and streams. It is surrounded by housing, but while in the middle there is not trace.
Strangely there are a number of man holes crossing the area for sewer lines, so at some point in the past it was all dug up. Hard to tell now, but there is a man hole on the right side about the middle.
The clay bank shows a thick layer of Marine clay (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_c) . Nasty stuff that underlays the region, bad for home foundations and roads. I didn't have a banana for scale, but it's about 1.5m thick.

  28. There is a stream down the hill from my house. It winds down a a valley to the larger stream I mentioned yesterday
The valley has been used by folks for a couple of hundred years, there is a main road that crosses the stream several times and many houses built right up to the banks.
Undercutting has been a problem due to the apparent increase in storm intensity over the last decade or so.
Erosion is a constant and various means have been attempted to keep it under control. Down the street from me is a concrete lined section.
This particular job is a continuation of a more recent attempt using more “natural” methods to keep things in check.
The stream has been carrying a pretty heavy silt load for the last couple of months. It had previously run pretty clear.
This is some of the current silt control. The pipe is carrying the stream from the other side of the construction area. Does not seem to be working all that well.
    It could be worse.

  29. Spring is around the corner. I was out back playing with Ruby when I spied a bit of color on the ground.
A tiny galaxy, ephemeral and beautiful.

  30. On one of our walks we go along "The Levee", built to stop flooding in a nearby neighborhood.
Ruby has taken to walking on the top, it starts out close to the ground at one end.
"I have the high ground now!"

  31. The thawing is happening, slowly. It's been getting above freezing around noon. So no big melt off, but it can be icy in places it wasn't before.
This creek down the hill from my house looks a bit more pastoral than the concrete channel under the ice.
And Ruby, wondering why I don't want to be outside, again.

  32. I went to the Kennedy Center last night to see Chris Thile and the National Symphony.
Nice program. Some Dvořák, Bach, Ellington, Punch Brothers, Pete Seegar, Beethoven , Caroline Shaw, and an extended piece of his called Attention!.
Attention! was sort of the story of Nickel Creek’s big break getting their cd’s in Starbucks ( remember back when they sold cd’s ). Also his meeting Carrie Fisher.
Nice evening. The sunset with Rosslyn VA from the Kennedy Center terrace was nice too.

  33. No sunset to speak of tonight 12/11/23. No clouds and the sun sets so far South West that it's down behind trees before any of the 'pretty stuff'.
So here's a Japanese Maple partly illuminated by the setting sun.
