In the UK, we suspended the death penalty in 1965 and permanently abolished it in 1969. One of the reasons for this was the execution of Derek Bentley in 1953. He was convicted of murdering a police officer: even though his accomplice, Christopher Craig, actually pulled the trigger and Bentley was already under arrest at the time that PC Sidney Miles was shot!
I recommend all advocates of capital punishment to read the book that I am currently reading: I can think of no better explanation of why you are wrong!

Chuck Klosterman's most recent book, "Rock*," imagines an alternate history of 20th Century music where the Beatles fade into obscurity and Velvet Underground became the biggest mainstream rock band in history.
The Velvet Underground are "kind of ground zero" for the idea that there are, on the one hand, bands for critics and serious music fans and, on the other hand, commercial bands. And often the critics and superfans don't take the megabands seriously. And over the last 20 years those two kinds of bands have converged.
Of course this conversation is about a lot more than pop music.
Klosterman talks with podcast host and fellow journalist Derek Thompson about fame and popularity, culture, contingency, why things become popular and the decline of reading.

In between sets, we quiz the audience with a short game show-style format with prizes up for grabs. We all could use a little laugh, so let's come together and kick off the festival with humour and a fun evening!

Phoebe Perry: Born in Nebraska, USA, Phoebe Perry is a comedian and theater maker who breathes life into characters with physicality and sensitivity. Her debut solo show Daydreamer has been featured at the Boom Chicago Comedy Festival, Utrecht International Comedy Festival and more. Aside from telling jokes, Nadine makes a really good shallot pasta and can deadlift over 100kg on a good day.

This year, the Warming Up Festival is not asking how you can live more sustainably. It is asking why so many people, particularly young people, have disengaged from a conversation that perhaps affects them the most.
Not out of indifference, but because of mental exhaustion. Because of climate-related stress and feelings of guilt. Because of a system that emphasises individual responsibility, whilst the biggest polluters and fossil fuel subsidies largely escape scrutiny. And sometimes also because of a climate movement that seems to demand perfection rather than engagement.
Over three days, the festival brings together art, journalism, music and discussion centred on the question of how individual choices relate to systems that are largely beyond our control, and where, as a collective, we can actually exert influence. It is a festival that makes space for imperfection, for doubt and for new forms of engagement.

Vědci z Okinawského institutu vědy a techniky zaznamenali, že kvantové spiny elektronů vyvolaly pohyb centimetrového objektu. Grafitová destička levitující nad soustavou magnetů nesla tří milimetrový diamant s defekty typu NV, jejichž spiny lze řídit laserem. Celek o hmotnosti asi 128 miligramů se posunul přibližně o 100 nanometrů. Samotný pohyb byl klasický, podnět k němu však vzešel z kvantového jevu. Experiment může přispět k budoucím pokusům o vytvoření kvantové superpozice u větších objektů a ke zkoumání vztahu kvantové mechaniky a gravitace.
