  4. I was watching the new #Veritasium video about zippers and, while the start of the video was great and informative, I noticed the #Hostinger sponsor spot promotes running "AI". Due to this video, now 4M people (minus #SponsorBlock users) have had this terrible idea promoted to them and at least some will probably end up deploying it, causing even further damage to the internet and broadening the "AI" DDoS's power.

I stopped watching and removed Veritasium from my RSS feed. Shame :/

  5. Very good video from Veritasium about that big backdoor issue on Linux recently:

Of course this is an issue with our trade based society 100%. How? Easy:

    1. The incentive to do harm in this society is quite high. For profit, for power that also leads to profit, for the fact that tribes and people are divided into groups trying to outgame the other groups. Like Iran has an incentive to hack USA, USA has an incentive to hack China, Russia has an incentive to hack the EU, and so forth. They can get sensitive information, blackmail, etc.. This is a global situation that has trade (as a practice) as the director of motives. Making people do what they do. Tribes hold onto their own resources, exploit other tribes, etc.. And so fighting with each other is natural.

If we lived in a society where trading was not a necessity and provided for all equally, we would have no reason to have tribes with borders, exploit other tribes, fight against each other when we are all in fact a big tribe, the human tribe.

    1. The people working on a lot of open source software struggle to work on it since they also have "day jobs". They have to TRADE to survive. Imagine people had access to their basic needs trade-free, via an UBI or whatever. More time to focus on creating secure and better software, more people who can do that. Less of those incentivized to do harm and insert backdoors.

Overall it is a cancerous trade society where humans are livestock and wolves. Consuming and being consumed.

The only sane way out of it is to HELP PEOPLE DETACH FROM THE TRADE SOCIETY. So they can be people and focus on RELEVANT STUFF.

Else it is a game of those who want to exploit and those who try to stop them. Endless....

Hervorragende, belegte Recherche. So sollte Wissenschaftsjournalismus aussehen.

  7. Veritasium covers the #xz compromise. This is well done. It starts off explaining open source. It explains encryption and compression. It explains software dependencies. It explains how the back door would have worked. Good watch.

  8. #Veritasium did a video on how #SSH almost became compromised by #XZ, and along the way in a really easy to understand yet precise way explains so many things about the software freedom community that I am truly impressed.

    Deserves to be shared widely:

  9. The new #Veritasium video about the #XZ vulnerability remains below their usual quality, I regret, although it surely is captivating, at least to a technical audience.

However, I think ordinary viewers might be confused about several aspects, since you need to understand software freedom, the open-source ecosystem and encryption first before the XZ attack can make sense to you, and there wasn't enough time in the video to explain all of it.

  10. This is an excellent video from #veritasium touches in the history of free software, #compression #algorithms and the dangers of supply chain attacks in open source projects.

  13. This 59 minute video is a fascinating, wonderful show. Lots of pizza and popcorn are needed to absorb it.

It explains the science of the technology that makes modern computer chips. But it's also an amazing story of the HUMANS involved, and a story of overcoming a huge number of almost insurmountable science/engineering problems.

  14. While big-upping this channel, another great one about the inherent dangers of monopolies/semi-monopolies & planned obsolescence: youtube.com/watch?v=j5v8D-alAKE

Some might see this as political, & it partly is, but it's a crucial tech issue at its core.

Also, this is definitely a @pluralistic topic. Cory Doctorow's written about this a *lot* in an essential way for clear understanding of the deep issues.

Also nicht spoilern!
