I didn't like Biden's cabinet, either, but this is absurd. Eg: Biden chose a somewhat corrupt zionist lady to head DNI, while Trump chose a man who worked for an Epstein-affiliated billionaire Trump placed on the board in charge of redeveloping Gaza (aka building his new resort) after we're done paying to bomb it flat until he was placed in charge of sdny to stop investigating Eric Adams' before being given control of America's intelligence apparatus. Or, compare the small-time "classy" influence peddling by Hunter & James Biden with the egregious & over-the-top corruption of the Trump clan i mentioned just a few examples of. It's like the difference between picking your pocket and stealing your car.

Politicians should have incredibly stringent regulations on their finances/investments, as well as those of associates with relevant financial flows. I fear that the open & apparently legalized corruption has grown to be more than the system can bear.

  14. There's a thread over on Bluesky asking about the first video game you remember playing. I can't help but think the answers would be more interesting here

Mine was _Tank_, a sit-down two-player cabinet game made by Atari. Our family used to go skiing about an hour north of Montreal every year and we stayed in Le Chantecler Hotel. There was a Tank in the hotel lobby

It was 1974 so I was 7. (I had a LOT of pinball under my belt by then.) Between me and my brothers, we probably dumped $50 into that game even though we only had a window of ~4 hours every day to play, and it was in strong competition with the indoor pool. Plus we needed to talk my dad out of parting with $5 for each of us every night. I think we lied and said we needed it for the jukebox in the bar/disco that we were somehow allowed to hang out in at night

    So... what was yours?

  17. @siracusa Just listened to the show! Some clarifications:
@marcoarment is right - NEC 210.52(C) did make outlets on the side of kitchen islands illegal. He’s also right that putting a grommet in the middle of the island is a spill hazard.

In my case, the entire wooden part is just a top, so if anything did spill, it would just land on the floor and not leak into a cabinet. Also, the outlet in the island is actually IN the island, not on the side. Cords all run through a small notch in the back of the island to an internal outlet.

  19. PORT TALBOT: Paul Potts comes home to open the rebuilt theatre, 20 years after Britain’s Got Talent

Port Talbot’s Paul Potts, the tenor who won Britain’s Got Talent with Nessun Dorma, is coming home to open his town’s rebuilt theatre.

He will sing at Yr Aelwyd on Saturday 27 February 2027, in a homecoming concert marking 20 years since his win. Yr Aelwyd, Welsh for The Hearth, is the new name for the Princess Royal Theatre in Civic Square.

Potts said he was “really excited and honoured to be chosen to open the newly refurbished theatre in Port Talbot”.

He said: “I’ve spent 20 years travelling the world and I’ve been incredibly lucky to perform in so many amazing places. But Port Talbot will always be home.”

From Britain’s Got Talent to Squid Game: 20 years of Paul Potts’ Nessun Dorma

It was 2007 when he walked nervously onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage and sang Nessun Dorma. He went on to win the competition.

His debut album, One Chance, topped the charts in 13 countries, according to Neath Port Talbot Council, and his story became the film One Chance, starring James Corden.

His Nessun Dorma recording turned up again in Netflix’s Squid Game 2, introducing him to a new generation of viewers.

The council puts his career at more than 2,000 performances in 45 countries. The homecoming concert will mix the music that defined it with stories from the road, it says.

Potts said: “To come back 20 years later and start the celebrations here, at the reopening of Yr Aelwyd, is incredibly special. I honestly can’t think of a better way to mark the anniversary.”

Yr Aelwyd reopening: Port Talbot’s theatre is now due in 2027

The theatre closed as the Princess Royal in August 2025 for a rebuild the council now puts at £18m.

When the Yr Aelwyd lettering went up in August, the council said the doors would open this autumn. Its own page for the venue now says the theatre is set to reopen in 2027.

Inside, the auditorium has a new timber ceiling and accessible seating on the top tier and front rows, with an extended foyer and a new lift for wheelchair users.

Cllr Cen Phillips, the council’s cabinet member for nature, tourism and wellbeing, said the reopening “marks an exciting new chapter for Port Talbot’s cultural life”.

He said: “Paul’s remarkable journey from Port Talbot to stages across the world is an inspiration, and we are delighted to welcome him home for this special anniversary concert.”

Paul Potts tickets: how to book for Yr Aelwyd

Tickets can be booked at porttalbottheatre.com/ticketbooth, the council says, or through the box office on 01639 763214.

The phone line is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.15pm.

  20. PYLONS: Labour warns Plaid’s plan to bury power lines could push up bills

Putting new power lines underground could push up electricity bills, Welsh Labour has warned.

Vikki Howells, Labour MS for Pontypridd Cynon Merthyr and the party’s energy spokesperson, said: “Burying cables can cost five times as much as overhead lines, making electric more expensive and decarbonisation more difficult.”

The Welsh Government wants new lines of up to 132kV buried by default, and two other opposition parties are behind it. Still unanswered: whether the rule would cover the two lines planned down the Towy Valley.

Underground cables should stay an option, says Labour, just not the default

Howells is not against buried cables altogether. Going underground should “absolutely remain available” where the landscape, the environment or other circumstances justify it, she said.

Her objection is to making it the default. She warned: “But a blanket presumption risks increasing the cost of delivering clean energy, damaging the very habitats it is intended to protect and placing additional pressure on agricultural land.”

The Welsh Government accepts that buried cables generally cost more to install and maintain. It says the cost of the network is “ultimately met through utility bills”.

On the plus side, the Government says, buried lines are less exposed to some severe weather and can reduce harm to birds and other wildlife.

For Plaid Cymru, the plan keeps an election promise. Adam Price, Plaid MS for Sir Gaerfyrddin and Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, has said the Government is “delivering on our manifesto commitment to end the use of steel lattice pylons”.

Howells saved her sharpest words for the other parties: “This is yet another issue on which Plaid Cymru, Reform and the Tories are united, putting our economy and environment at grave risk.”

Towy Valley power lines: Reform wants to know if the new rules will apply

Reform UK wants new power lines underground “wherever possible”. Its deputy leader in Wales, Laura Anne Jones, MS for Sir Fynwy Torfaen, said: “Welsh Government must make clear whether its undergrounding policy will apply to projects already in the pipeline.”

She said Green GEN Cymru was pushing ahead with plans for “60 miles of overhead lines” in the valley.

She added: “We’ve visited affected farmers and landowners and seen what this would mean for their livelihoods and the picturesque landscape of that valley that heavily relies on tourism.”

Green GEN has already swapped steel towers for single poles around 22 metres tall on both of its routes. It says burying the lines in full is not economically viable.

Andrew RT Davies backs underground cables to keep ‘eyesores’ off Welsh landscapes

The Welsh Conservatives are on the same side as Reform. Andrew RT Davies, Conservative MS for Pen-y-bont Bro Morgannwg and shadow minister for farming and the environment, said: “We welcome this consultation and the move towards making underground cables the default for new electricity lines in Wales.”

Wales needed a modern electricity network, he said, “but communities should not have to accept eyesores across our beautiful natural landscapes, which must be conserved”.

The Welsh Government’s consultation on the plan closes on 15 January 2027.

  21. WR Advisory Group: Philippines Very Risky for Investors

Based on its research covering a wide range of economic factors, financial readings and the public’s perception of governance, the WR Advisory Group finds the Philippines very risky for investors, according to a news report by the Manila Bulletin.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin report. Some parts in boldface…

Investing in the Philippines is expected to be “very risky” in the coming months, driven by economic uncertainties and growing political dissatisfaction with the Marcos administration, according to professional services firm WR Advisory Group.

Based on its inaugural Philippine Political and Country Outlook Report, WR Advisory Group assigned the country a score of 10.375 out of 25, placing it at an elevated risk level with a deteriorating outlook.

WR Advisory Group President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Robin Michael Garcia said the score indicates that investing in the country carries heightened risk due to ongoing economic and political factors.

“You can invest, but just know that there are risks. So if you see a potential opportunity in this period, it’s going to be risky,” Garcia said in a media briefing on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Regarding the country’s economic outlook, he noted a strong possibility of stagflation, a scenario marked by simultaneous high inflation and elevated unemployment.

Garcia added that these risks are further compounded by national government debt, which reached ₱19.07 trillion at the end of July, equivalent to 66 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Economic growth also slowed to 2.3 percent in the second quarter, while inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) dropped by more than 33 percent through May.

Garcia warned that stagflation is a real possibility, particularly if the government “does not pay enough attention to economic management and economic policy.”

“The more that we think about other things, the more that the attention is going everywhere, except for solving this potential scenario,” he stressed.

Much of that focus, according to Garcia, has shifted to political controversies, including the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

While clarifying that he was not questioning the validity of the impeachment, he explained that the proceedings come at a time when Congress should be prioritizing legislative reforms to address the country’s economic challenges.

“At this time, there are a lot of economic issues. Firms care more about economic legislation and economic policy rather than mere politics,” Garcia said.

He identified politically sensitive sectors, including energy, telecommunications, mining, and banking, as the most vulnerable to these heightened risks.

The report also noted that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s performance ratings continue to decline, while frequent turnover in his Cabinet poses additional stability risks for businesses.

“Senate confidence also deteriorated sharply, adding institutional strain to an already weak legislative and regulatory environment,” the report stated.

These factors are accompanied by a negative assessment of national conditions, with 68 percent of Filipinos saying that the Philippines is going in the wrong direction, according to the report.

Let me end this post by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? Do you think the WR Advisory Group is correct with its analysis about the Philippines being very risky for investors? Are you convinced that foreign investors are avoiding the Philippines right now? Do you think the Philippines is going towards the wrong direction now?
