I've taken a crack at preserving #NCAR 's Java METAR viewer, which is miraculously still up-and-running after all these years. Some reverse engineering of how it ingests data is probably still needed.

There's been a lot of effort to preserve things like Flash and GIFs, but has anyone tried to put together an archive of Java applets? Several web and archive.org searches have come up empty. I did find reference to one book from 1997 that included an applet library on CD, but neither the (physical) book nor its CD are anywhere to be found either.
I can't be the only one who cares about it, am I? :thonk:

Awhile back, I posted about the NSF National Center for Atomspheric Research's beautifully #RetroWeb #USwx site. On a hunch, I decided to see if their old Java METAR viewer was still up, despite the link to it having been removed.
...IT'S STILL THERE! AND IT STILL WORKS! 🤯
